2017-18 A-League: Round 21 Preview & Betting Tips

February 21st 2018, 4:32pm, By: andyrosos

We had a horror week in A-League betting tips last weekend, losing on three tips and pushing the last. We’ll look to bounce back in a big way this weekend as we take a look at some of the key games in Week 21 kicking off this Friday night.

A-League Week 21 Betting Tips

Melbourne Victory vs Adelaide United (Saturday 7.50pm AEDT)

The Melbourne Victory have been a shell of the team that reached the grand final last season. They suffered another shock loss at home to the Brisbane Roar in Week 20 and while they’ll remain at home this Saturday night, they’ll get a tough test as they face Adelaide United, who haven’t lost in their last three games.

It’s been one of the most inconsistent seasons in Melbourne Victory history so far, and they are still barely clinging onto a top five position after losing their last three games. The three losses in the A-League were followed by a 4-1 trouncing at the hands of Chinese team Shanghai SIPG in the AFC Champions League on Tuesday night.

Nothing suggests that the Victory should start as favourites here, but for some reason they still garner a lot of respect with the bookies. They’ll be on the back of a tough four game stretch over the past two weeks. After the horror last month they’ve had, combined with United actually looking quite impressive in their last three games, we like Adelaide to find some points here.

TIP: Adelaide (double chance) - $1.72 at Ladbrokes

Perth Glory vs Melbourne City (Saturday 10pm AEDT)

The late game of the Saturday triple header sees Perth Glory hosting Melbourne City from 10pm. Melbourne City were decimated by Sydney FC last weekend in a game that would have been demoralising for their confidence heading into the finals. They still sit in third position on the ladder but will be looking to bridge the five point gap to Newcastle in second in an attempt to secure the first round bye in the finals.

Perth sit seven points outside of the top six after a disappointing season so far. They have won just three of their last 10 games and lost their last two to Adelaide and Wellington both away from home. They’ll welcome the return to NIB Stadium this weekend, where regardless of Perth’s form, it’s always a tough place to play.

Melbourne City skipper Bruno Fornaroli will be back in the line-up for his second game since returning from injury and could potentially start for City this weekend. The addition gives Melbourne a deadly forward line, and given the history between these two clubs, it could spell out another high scoring match. 28 goals have been scored in the last six meetings between these two clubs, we like the overs here.

TIP: Total goals OVER 3.5 - $2.40 at Sportsbet

Sydney FC vs Western Sydney Wanderers (Sunday 6.30pm AEDT)

The Sydney derby headlines a great slate of games on Sunday evening as Sydney FC will look to continue their dominant season which currently sees them atop the A-League table with a 15-4-1 record. Western Sydney are one of only two teams to defeat Sydney in A-League competition over the past two seasons, and are currently clinging onto a top six position by just four points.

Western Sydney were impressive in their 2-2 draw with Newcastle in Week 20 and are now undefeated in their last three games. They have, however, struggled to earn maximum points this season, already racking up eight draws this season, the most of any team in the league.

So hard to look past the might of Sydney FC here. The intensity of the Sydney derby usually levels the field to some degree, which is how the Wanderers were able to defeat the Sky Blues late last season. However, the 5-0 drubbing that Sydney FC handed WSW back in December has us thinking that the Sky Blues will take this one.

TIP: Sydney FC -1 - $2.30 at Sportsbet
