There are only two matches on Sunday in AFL Round 8, with the first of those getting underway at the SCG with the Sydney Swans hosting the Melbourne Demons. Both clubs have had excellent starts to the 2026 season, although it’s the ladder-leading Swans who come into this fixture as the clear favourites in the betting markets.

Sydney vs Melbourne Prediction & Betting Tips: AFL 2026 Round 8
Ruthless Swans
The Sydney Swans have been one of the most exciting teams of the 2026 season, storming to a 6-1 record and announcing themselves as serious premiership contenders. Their only loss was a tough 17-point defeat to Hawthorn in Round 2 at the MCG. In their six wins, they've been ruthless, taking care of every opponent by 32 points or more. What really stands out is their rock-solid defence. They've kept all six of those teams to 69 points or fewer, shutting down attacking sides like the Brisbane Lions and Gold Coast Suns. With their star-studded lineup firing, Sydney looks incredibly dangerous at the SCG.
Can the Demons Win Interstate?
Melbourne head north with plenty of confidence from their strong MCG record, but their away form has been a worry. The Demons have dropped both matches on the road this season, including a shock loss to a struggling Essendon outfit. Max Gawn is still a powerhouse in the ruck, yet Melbourne's midfield doesn't quite match the depth and class of Sydney's engine room. Away from their home comforts, they have found it tough to sustain the intensity needed against elite ball-movement teams.
Recent H2H History
While the head-to-head history shows Melbourne winning three of the last five, very little can be taken from these past meetings. Both clubs have undergone significant coaching changes over the last two years, shifting their tactical identities and structures entirely since those older results.
What to Expect? Here’s our Best Bet!
The Swans have established a defensive standard that is currently the benchmark of the league, having kept their opponents to under 70 points in all six of their wins this season. Sydney is particularly suffocating on their home deck, averaging just 65 points against per game at the SCG in 2026. With the Swans consistently dominating field position and defensive transitions at home, I expect them to keep the Demons forwards at bay.

Sydney vs Melbourne Prop Bet
We’re expecting this to be a free-flowing, transition type of match which plays right into the hands of Chad Warner who’s one of the most damaging midfielders with ball in hand. He’s been in great goalkicking touch in 2026 with 10 goals to his name, including 8 in his last four highlighted by a bag of 3 against the Bulldogs last weekend.

Sydney vs Melbourne Same Game Multi
Sydney to Win: They just have too much class for the Demons and should be getting the job done without too much difficulty.
Just McInerney 24+ Disposals: He’s been ultra consistent this season with 24+ disposals in 6/7 games and in the one he missed he had 23.
Charlie Curnow 3+ Goals: He’s found his feet as a Swan with bags of 4, 7, and 3 goals in his last four games and should get plenty of looks in what should be a high-scoring game.
Bailey Fritsch 2+ Goals: He’s been in strong form this season with 12 goals in 6 games. He’s kicked 2 in 4 of his last five outings.
