Match Preview
The Sydney Derby is back in Round 8, and there’s plenty riding on it as the Swans take on the Giants this Sunday at the SCG. It’s more than just bragging rights this time—both teams need the four points to stay in touch with the top eight after some shaky form through the early part of the season.
Sydney hasn’t had the smoothest start to 2025. They’re sitting at 2–5 and coming off a disappointing 38-point loss to the Suns last week. The Swans were never really in it after quarter time, and despite their fast start, their inability to run games out is becoming a worrying trend. If they want to turn things around, the derby at home is the perfect place to start.
Injuries have been a big part of the storyline for the Swans. They are still missing some key names—Errol Gulden is out with a fractured ankle, and Callum Mills remains sidelined with a plantar fascia issue. Without those two, who provide that top end support for the likes of Heeney and Warner, they are struggling to find the right mix in the midfield.
GWS isn’t faring much better. They’re 3–4 and just outside the eight, but their 32-point loss to the Bulldogs last round exposed some defensive issues. They’ve shown flashes of brilliance this year, but consistency has been their biggest problem.
GWS is slightly healthier, but will still be without Brent Daniels, who is out for a few more weeks with an abdominal injury. Stephen Coniglio is also in doubt with a glute issue.
The derby always brings extra spice, and given both teams are coming off losses, expect fireworks early. There’s no love lost between these two, and with their seasons hanging in the balance, desperation could be the difference. Tough game to pick here, but the Giants may just have the edge with a bit more depth in the midfield available to them at the moment. Expect them to assert themselves in the middle of the ground and cover the spread here.

Jesse Hogan 2+ Goals - Four games into his season and has been in great form so far. Has kicked multiple goals in every game, including a monster 9-goal haul against the Eagles a few weeks ago. Should get a pretty good matchup here against a Swans defence that is a little undermanned. Played three games against the Swans last year and booted six goals.
Lachie Ash 25+ Disposals - Has been one of the best ball-winners in the comp this season. Has had at least 29 touches in his last five straight games, running rampant across half back and the wing.
Matt Roberts 20+ Disposals - Has taken his opportunity with increased midfield time this season in the absence of Mills/Gulden. 20+ in 6/7 games and had 28 against the Suns on the weekend.
SGM Odds: $2.63 at BoomBet
