Royal Ascot 2023 Day 2 Preview and Betting Tips

With thanks to Tips4Punters

Race 1: Queen Mary Stakes (Group 2) – 11:30pm AEST

It’s all about the big fields on Day 2 of Royal Ascot kicking off with 27 runners in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes.

Plenty in with a chance in the opener including (3) Beautiful Diamond who scored on her debut at Nottingham at the beginning of the month. Winning by 3½ lengths on good to firm ground. Her trainer (Karl Burke) won this very race last year.

(5) Born To Rock also won on debut in Yarmouth in May winning by 4¼ lengths. Champion jockey Will Buick rides for trainer Jane Chapple-Hyam.

The Richard Fahey trained (21) Midnight Affair was last seen winning the Hilary Needler Trophy Fillies' Conditions Stakes at Beverley (nice 2-year-old race for fillies). Before this was 2nd on debut at Newmarket.

The best of the US runners looks to be (9) Crimson Advocate for trainer George Weaver, last seen winning a Juvenile Fillies Stakes race at Gulfstream Park in May. With John Velazquez in the saddle, she could run very well.

The other Karl Burke runner (14) GOT TO LOVE A GREY runs for the very popular racing syndicate Middleham Park Racing. She won on debut by 6 lengths and followed up that win with another in a Listed race at York beating a stablemate that day.

One at a bigger price who could run well is the French runner (1) Balsam with Ryan Moore in the saddle who kicked off the Royal meeting with 3 winners.

(14) Got To Love A Grey

$10.00

Race 2: Kensington Palace Fillies' Handicap – 12:05am AEST

(16) LADY EROS is the pick for the Kensington Palace Fillies' Handicap for John & Thady Gosden. Last seen winning a Yarmouth Handicap at the beginning of the month. Before this she was 5th at Ascot. She drops down to 7f from a mile which is a distance she has run at previously.

Others to mention include the Owen Burrows trained (9) Tarrabb, running with a tongue-tie.

(2) Indian Wish for Joseph O’Brien (who has 3 runners in this) is worth a look. The filly had decent form in France including a Listed win before making the move to the O’Brien yard.

(4) Mukaddamah for Roger Varian (who won the Wolferton Stakes yesterday with Royal Champion) could go well at big price and is one for each way punters. Runs with cheekpieces on.

(16) LADY EROS

$9.00

Race 3: Duke Of Cambridge Stakes (Group 2) – 12:40am AEST

No winners for Frankie Dettori yesterday but I think this will change today with his mount (7) PROSPEROUS VOYAGE for Ralph Beckett. She has a Group 1 win in the bag already and was last seen winning the Group 3 Princess Elizabeth Stakes at Epsom at the beginning of June and was a close 2nd in the Group 1 Qipco 1000 Guineas Stakes at Newmarket in May last year. She can add this Group 2 to her CV today.

The other dangers in this race include (4) Jumbly coming from the Joseph O’Brien yard, runner up in a Group 2 at the Curragh on debut for her new trainer, previously with Harry & Roger Charlton.

The other danger being (1) Grande Dame for John & Thady Gosden with Jamie Spencer in the saddle.

(7) PROSPEROUS VOYAGE

$3.75

Race 4: Prince Of Wales's Stakes (Group 1) – 1:20am AEST

What a race we have in store! Aidan O’Brien started with a bang yesterday with 2 winners. He runs (4) Luxembourgwho was last seen winning the Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh in May beating Bay Bridge (who lines up again) but (2) Bay Bridge shouldn’t be discounted.

(6) MY PROSPERO for William Haggas is the pick with Aussie Tom (Marquand) up. Stepping back up in trip he could give the top 2 something to think about. He was last seen running 4th in the Group 1 Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes at Newbury.

And you clearly cannot discount the 2021 Derby winner (1) Adayar for Charlie Appleby and the boys in blue.

(6) My Prospero

$4.75

Race 5: Royal Hunt Cup (Heritage Handicap) 2am AEST

A huge field of 30 runners go in the Royal Hunt Cup! I’ve managed to whittle down the short list which includes (21) Perotto for Roger Varian.

(11) BLUE FOR YOU is the pick for the race, trained by David O’Meara, recent 5th at York should have him ready to go in this.

I also like (12) Sonny Liston, gets the headgear and could run well at nice odds.

At a bigger price the Harry Eustace trained (20) Chasing Aphrodite looks a good option for each way punters with Hayley Turner in the saddle.

Anything could win this but hopefully its Blue For You. Fingers crossed!

(11) BLUE FOR YOU

$17

Race 6: Queen's Vase (Group 2) – 2:35am AEST

Frankie Dettori rides (5) Gregory for Team Gosden. Won his debut race and won a Listed race at Goodwood the next time. He goes up in trip with more to come surely.

The Crisford’s run (2) Chesspiece who kept on well to win a York handicap in May. Another that goes up in trip.

Pick for me is the Aidan O’Brien trained (9) PEKING OPERA, won the Listed Irish Stallion Farms EBF Yeats Stakes at Navan on his last start beating Etna Rosso (who lines up again). He is the best of the Irish challengers in my opinion.

(9) PEKING OPERA

$6.00

Race 7: Windsor Castle Stakes (Listed Race) – 3:10am AEST

Another big field of runners and yet another race Aidan O’Brien has a good record in and he runs (12) Johannes Brahms, who is defiantly a contender. As is (3) Barnwell Boy for Charlie Johnston. Drops down in trip from 6f to 5f.

At a bigger price I am siding with (26) WORLD OF DARCY for Karl Burke. Won on debut at Pontefract and then was 2nd on his latest start at Sandown in the Listed Racehorse Lotto National Stakes, beaten by smart stablemate Elite Status who runs in the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes on Thursday.

(26) WORLD OF DARCY

$17
