Match Preview

Remarkably Richmond have exceeded all expectations coming into Round 10, with three wins already under their belt. The Tigers held on to a 2 point victory thanks to a game saving tackle from Tom Brown in the final 30 seconds, to avoid being the first team to lose against West Coast this season.

It was a tale of missed opportunities for the third week in a row for North Melbourne, as the Kangaroos threw away multiple opportunities to win, in their draw with Brisbane. The draw follows narrow losses against Essendon and Port Adelaide where the Roos also had an abundance of opportunities late to win the game.

Kaleb Smith, Campbell Gray and Jasper Alger have been named in Richmond’s extended squad, with no confirmed omissions at the time of writing. North Melbourne have included Zac Fisher, Wil Dawson and Will Phillips in Sunday’s extended squad, and like Richmond have no confirmed outs at the time of writing.

The big positive coming out of Round 9 for the Kangaroos was their work around the ball against arguably the best midfield in the competition. North Melbourne recorded +16 contested possessions and +15 clearances, but their poor use meant they couldn’t get full advantage for their midfield dominance.

North Melbourne went at 67.6% disposal efficiency (7% below league average), and recorded 71 turnovers (8.4 above league average), which caused the Roos to have the same amount of inside 50’s as the Lions.

If the Kangaroos can replicate a similar dominance around the ball on Sunday, they should be able to blow Richmond away. Tristan Xerri is in All-Australian form ranking fourth in the league for clearances, and as a team North rank fourth in the AFL for clearances. Richmond are ranked 17th for clearances, 18th for tackles and 18th for inside 50’s which gives the Kangaroos a massive opportunity to dominate the territory battle.

Richmond are the second lowest scoring team in the AFL scoring just 67 points per game, and have the 16th ranked defence, conceding 101 points per game. The Tigers have conceded 5 scores this season over 107 points, which should give North Melbourne confidence that they can kick a big score if their forwards get supply.

With Richmond having three wins on the board already, it’s likely the Kangaroos come out a much more desperate side on Sunday afternoon. North Melbourne have won the two of the last three meetings between the two sides, and will record a desperately needed win.

North Melbourne -13.5
