After five straight defeats, including losses of 90, 76 and 49 points in the last month, Port Adelaide produced their grittiest performance of the season to upset the Giants in Canberra last week. After conceding scores of 131, 89, 115 and 100 in the four games prior to Round 13, Port Adelaide’s defence got to work, restricting the Giants to only 50 points. In Port Adelaide’s seven losses this season, they’ve conceded scores of 136, 72, 89, 131, 89, 115 and 100, an average of 104 points per game.
Which Melbourne Will Show Up?
Melbourne looked like one of the worst sides in the competition when they started 0-5, but showed some excellent form winning five of their next six games with wins over the Lions and Dockers in that run. They were horrendous in a 28-point loss to St Kilda in Round 13, but then served a brave performance in a one-point defeat against Collingwood last week. At their best the Demons can produce football capable of beating any team in the competition, but their worst is also capable of losing to any side.
Stats That Matter
As highlighted before, defence is massive for both teams. In Port Adelaide’s five wins they’ve conceded an average score of 74 points, in their seven losses this season they’ve conceded an average score of 104 points. Melbourne have conceded 80 points per game across their five wins, while they’ve conceded 97 points per game.
Melbourne have shown a higher ceiling in their front half in recent times, producing four scores of 99 points or more in their last six games. In that same time period, Port Adelaide only have one score above 85 points. Port Adelaide need to make this a scrappy affair if they’re going to win this, they can’t afford to get in a shootout.

Melbourne’s attacking capacity looms as the key in a matchup between two inconsistent sides. Melbourne’s form line has been much stronger of late, with the Power winning just one of their last five matches. The Demons have a good record against Port Adelaide, winning four of their last six games against the Power, including two of their last three games against Port at Adelaide Oval.
With what Melbourne’s forward line can produce if their midfield gets going, it holds them in good stead against a Port Adelaide side that has struggled to score this season. The Power’s defence has been vulnerable in 2025, and the Demons will expose them on Sunday afternoon.
