AFL Round 10 Preview & Betting Tips

Port Adelaide vs Hawthorn

Sunday 3:20pm AEST, Sunday 19th May, Adelaide Oval

The Power held on for their best win of the season last week, beating Geelong at GMHBA Stadium for the first time since 2007. Port Adelaide flew out of the blocks with an eight goal to one first quarter, and led by as much as 49 points in the second quarter. The Power then conceded nine goals to three in the second half, but just managed to hold on in a six point victory.

Port Adelaide’s early dominance was built on the back of clinical centre clearance work , kicking 5.1 from stoppages in the first quarter alone. Despite missing Connor Rozee, the Power’s midfield ran riot with Zak Butters (34 disposals, 7 clearances), Ollie Wines (33 disposals, 9 clearances), Willem Drew (27 disposals, 5 clearances) and Jason Horne-Francis (26 disposals, 7 clearances) broke the game open for the Power.

There’s positive news on the selection front for Ken Hinkley’s side with Connor Rozee, Jordan Sweet and Jason Burgoyne all named in Sunday’s extended squad. At the time of writing there are no confirmed omissions.

Hawthorn will make at least two changes with Jack Scrimshaw (suspension) and Jack Gunston (managed) out of the side this weekend. The Hawks have confirmed Ethan Phillips will make his debut, while Mabior Chol, Bailey Macdonald, Max Ramsden and Changkuoth Jiath have been included in the squad. If Jiath is selected it will be his first game of the season after suffering a serious hamstring injury during preseason.

After starting the season 0-5, Hawthorn have won three of their last four games including wins over St Kilda and the Western Bulldogs in the last fortnight. The win over St Kilda was impressive given the Hawks were without skipper James Sicily, and held on despite not kicking a goal in the fourth quarter.

Hawthorn were led by Karl Amon’s 31 disposals as the Hawks defence stood tall, with St Kilda winning the inside 50 count by 8. Given the quality of Port Adelaide’s forwardline, the Hawks cannot afford to lose the inside 50 count if they’re a chance to win.

Match Prediction: Although Hawthorn have punched above their weight the last fortnight, the prospect of facing Port Adelaide at the Adelaide Oval presents a much greater challenge than the Dogs and Saints. The Hawks are ranked 15th in points for this season averaging only 70 points per game, and that simply won’t stack up against a Port Adelaide side that has kicked over 100 points in five of its nine games in 2024.

The Power also have the Hawks number comfortably in the midfield battle given what Rozee, Butters and Horne-Francis have produced this year. Port Adelaide are ranked sixth in the AFL for clearances, while Hawthorn are ranked 17th for this stat, if the Power win the clearance battle and play the game in their front half, it’s going to be a long day for the Hawks.

Zak Butters 30+ Disposals: With Connor Rozee out, Zak Butters put Port Adelaide on his shoulders with 34 disposals and a goal in a match winning performance. Butters has three 30+ disposal performances from his last four games, and looks set for another big outing.

Jason Horne-Francis 20+ Disposals: Much like his other teammates in the midfield, Jason Horne-Francis is putting together a quality season, averaging 22 disposals per game. Horne-Francis has hit the 20 disposals mark in five of his seven games in 2024.

Mitch Georgiades 2+ Goals: After missing nearly the entirety of 2023, Mitch Georgiades has made an excellent return since coming back into the side in Round 4. Georgiades has kicked multiple goals in four of his six games in 2024 including 2 goals against the Cats last week. Given how thin the Hawks are in their key defensive stocks, Georgiades shouldn’t have any opportunities getting looks at goal.
