Panthers vs Sea Eagles Preview & Betting Tips: NRL Round 9 2026

May 2nd 2026, 11:16am, By: Ben Bridge

Panthers vs Sea Eagles Betting Tips

Sunday evening at CommBank Stadium gives us one of the best matchups of the round, with Penrith facing a Manly side that has become one of the form teams of the competition under Kieran Foran. The Panthers are still the benchmark, but the Sea Eagles are flying, and both teams have been first half monsters this season. That is why I’m going away from the side and attacking the first half total.

This shapes as a fast start game. Penrith are coming off a 44-12 demolition of Newcastle, with Dylan Edwards producing a first half hat-trick, while Manly have won four straight under Foran after beating Parramatta 33-18. The official Round 9 preview notes Penrith have named no changes, while Manly have Nathan Brown recalled.

Both teams can score early, both have enough strike through their edges, and both have shown they are comfortable putting teams under immediate scoreboard pressure. Let’s dig in and preview the matchup, and why I’m looking at a different type of bet this week. Let's take a look!

Panthers vs Sea Eagles Prediction & Tips: 2026 NRL Round 9

Panthers Back to Their Ruthless Best

Penrith’s 44-12 win over Newcastle was a complete reset after a couple of uneven weeks. They were ruthless from the start, with Dylan Edwards scoring three tries in seven first half minutes and finishing as the clear headline act. Nathan Cleary controlled the contest beautifully, and once the Panthers got on top, the Knights simply had no answers.

What mattered most was the speed of Penrith’s start. This was not a side grinding its way into control over 60 minutes. They hit Newcastle early, turned field position into points, and effectively ended the contest before halftime. That is relevant because it lines up perfectly with this week’s betting angle.

Penrith’s first half profile has been excellent. When they are switched on, they squeeze teams with territory and then punish them as soon as the defensive line starts to overfold. Dylan Edwards’ support play, Cleary’s kicking, and the outside backs’ ability to finish chances all make them dangerous before the game settles.

Against Manly, they may need to score early. The Sea Eagles are too confident right now to assume Penrith can simply wait them out. That should create a more aggressive opening tempo than a standard Panthers game.

Manly Keep Rolling Under Foran

Manly’s 33-18 win over Parramatta kept the Foran run alive and pushed the Sea Eagles into a completely different tier of confidence. Foran became the first coach in the grand final era to take over mid-season and win his first four games, which says plenty about the shift at Brookvale.

The win over the Eels was not just about emotion either. Manly were sharp. Jake and Ben Trbojevic were influential, Jamal Fogarty guided the side well before his injury concern, and Haumole Olakau’atu was dominant on an edge. Even without Tom Trbojevic, they still had enough movement and confidence to score freely.

That is what makes this matchup so appealing from a first half total perspective. Manly are no longer just trying to stay in games. They are attacking early, playing with tempo, and trusting their edges. That can make them dangerous, but it can also leave space the other way if Penrith get clean ball.

In other words, this is not a game where I expect Manly to turn up and park the bus. They have been too good for that. They will take their shots, and that should help push the first 40 minutes toward points.

Panthers vs Sea Eagles Recent History

The only meeting last season came in Round 8, when Manly beat Penrith 26-10 in a major road win. That result matters because it showed the Sea Eagles can go toe-to-toe with Penrith when they bring energy and edge speed. Penrith have generally had the better of this rivalry across the modern era, but Manly have shown more than once that they can make the Panthers uncomfortable when they start fast.

Recent meetings:
2025 Round 8: Sea Eagles def Panthers 26-10
2024 Round 14: Panthers def Sea Eagles 32-22
2024 Round 5: Sea Eagles def Panthers 32-18
2023 Round 24: Panthers def Sea Eagles 24-12
2023 Round 6: Panthers def Sea Eagles 44-12

First Half Points the Best Angle

This is a classic case where the full game markets feel a little more difficult than the first half angle. Penrith deserve favouritism, but Manly are in outstanding form, and I don’t want to step in front of them with a big spread. The total is playable, but the first half over is cleaner.

Both teams have been first half beasts this season. Penrith can pile on points early through pressure and field position, while Manly have been aggressive enough under Foran to start fast rather than wait their way into games. That creates a perfect setup for points before the tactical adjustments slow things down.

I also like the matchup dynamic. Penrith know Manly are dangerous and will not want to give them belief. Manly, meanwhile, know they cannot just absorb pressure for 40 minutes and hope to survive. That should produce intent from both sides early, whether through Penrith’s structured pressure or Manly’s willingness to attack edges.

At plus money, first half over 24.5 is simply too appealing. You only need four converted tries or a mix of tries and penalty goals, and given how both sides are starting games, that is well within range.

If the game becomes a grind later, so be it. We’re not betting the final 80. We’re betting the opening tempo, and I expect both teams to bring plenty of fire early.

First half total (over 24.5)

Panthers vs Sea Eagles Player Prop Bet

Paul Alamoti has been solid this season, without being spectacular, however I think this week is the week. The Sea Eagles’ left edge defence has struggled this season, and with Tolutau Koula at fullback, Clayton Faulalo is being asked to do a lot in his place.

Paul Alamoti (1+ try)

$3.10
