Match Preview
North Melbourne will be looking to build on a pair of competitive performances when they host Brisbane at Hobart’s Ninja Stadium to wrap up Round 9. The Kangaroos remain stuck on one win for the season – an upset of the Demons back in Round 2 – and have since dropped six straight. However, there are signs of progress under Alastair Clarkson, with narrow losses to Port Adelaide and Essendon across the past fortnight suggesting improvement. Last week’s 3-point defeat to the Bombers was their best showing since March, and they’ll take confidence into Sunday’s clash knowing they pushed a top-eight side to the brink.
A trio of changes has been made to North’s line-up, with young gun George Wardlaw returning from a corked thigh in a significant boost. Wardlaw has impressed in his two appearances this year, adding spark to the midfield and bringing intensity around the contest. Playing in Hobart should also offer a minor edge for the Roos, who traditionally compete well at the venue despite their ladder position. While they are still heavy underdogs at home, the narrowing margins in recent weeks suggest they are trending in the right direction.
Brisbane arrive in Hobart sitting third on the ladder and could end the round in top spot with a win. Chris Fagan’s side have been consistent all year, dropping only one game – a Round 6 defeat to Collingwood – and are coming off a solid 17-point win in last weekend’s QClash against Gold Coast. The Lions have also made three changes, with Kai Lohmann’s return from injury the most notable. Brisbane have had complete control over this fixture in recent times, winning the last three meetings by comfortable margins, and are once again 40.5-point favourites heading into Sunday.
While recent history and ladder position clearly favour the Lions, this contest shapes as a potential danger game. Brisbane are coming off an emotional and physical QClash win, and the travel to Hobart could sap some of their usual sharpness. North Melbourne, meanwhile, have tightened the screws defensively and are starting to play with greater confidence. If they can replicate the energy and structure shown in the past two weeks, they should be capable of keeping things competitive and staying within striking distance of the Lions. Expect Brisbane to win, but not by the margin the odds suggest.
