Australia and Samoa meet in Sydney on Sunday night with a place in the 2026 Rugby League World Cup final on the line. The Kangaroos enter as favourites, but Samoa have shown they can challenge elite opposition and will be eager to turn a narrow defeat to Tonga into a statement performance.
Australia cruised past the Cook Islands 66-6 in their latest outing, although their execution was not always as convincing as the scoreline suggests. Samoa, meanwhile, pushed Tonga all the way in a 20-18 loss and will take confidence from their ability to create opportunities against a powerful forward pack.
The Kangaroos’ ability to control the ruck and exploit space out wide will be crucial, while Samoa must overcome the absence of a key playmaker. We examine the tactical matchup, the key numbers and our betting selections for this semi-final, including a three-leg same-game multi.

The quality is there but they need to lift
Always expected to dominate the contest against the Cook Islands, there is a case that the Australia was short of the usual standard expected of them in this 66-6 victory. Their 12-try effort was not without shortcomings, with the majority of that occurring in attack; they completed at just 66% with 53% possession. Making 11.3m per carry should’ve returned a greater reward for them as they also only made 574 PCM’s.
Defensively, they missed 29 tackles, but limited their opponents to just 7.8m per carry. They will take the win but the expected combinations within this team are far from the finished product heading into the business end of the competition.
The surprise packet
Samoa suffered a heart breaking 20-18 defeat by Tonga last week with most arguing that they were let down by their goal kicking as they scored more tries than their opponents (3 vs 4). It wasn’t until there were 10 minutes remaining that their opponents scored the winning try and jumped ahead.
Despite dominating possession (53%), they had a poor completion rate (67%) and could only manage 8.6m per carry. This saw fewer PCM’s and line breaks compared to Tonga.
Samoa's defence also needs improvement, missing 35 tackles. Still, they will take confidence out of that performance and know that, with a higher standard of execution, they can compete with any team in the competition and be a chance of winning.
Stats that matter
- Australia have played Samoa 11 times in their history with the Kangaroos winning every contest.
- Australia has scored an average of 42ppg while conceding 16.7; both statistics are below the standard that was expected of them. Samoa have scored 53.3ppg in attack and allowed just 10ppg defensively, albeit against struggling nations.
Class to prevail…just
The Australians have not performed well this tournament by their lofty standards.
Overlooking the fact that every team increases their intensity and execution against the top ranked team, they have failed to generate a fast ruck to create advantages for their attacking sparks. Rather, they have played monotonous NRL play through the middle and relied upon players creating for them on their edges. That will work to some extent here.
Samoa were dealt a huge blow when Harris-Tavita was ruled out of this clash. Not only do they lose a playmaker that takes attention away from Luai, but they are also now without their first-choice goal kicker.
The Australians must aim to burn as much of their opponent’s energy as possible in the middle, slowing down the ruck defensively and speeding it up with the ball. Having Samoa defend on the back foot will create space on the edges; their carries at the beginning of attacking sets are also important to generate positive field position. This is an area Samoa excel at, but the intensity of the Australian defensive line can counter that.
The hosts will be pushed to the limit and may need to produce something special but at the end of the game, they should prevail by less than 2 tries as fatigue from last week’s match negatively impacts Samoa.

Australia vs Samoa Same Game Multi
Three-Leg Same Game Multi
- Total points over 41.5 – set lower than expected, the 6-again rules are likely to play havoc in the middle of the field and open this game more than what is anticipated.
- Bostock to score – he was the difference in game one of the competition for his team and he hasn’t slowed down. Scoring 6 tries this tournament, his ability to leap over defenders in the air makes him a dangerous attacking threat.
- Walsh to score – given the role as starting fullback, Walsh will want to leave his mark on this game. Just like he did against New Zealand, he will look to be involved as much as possible and is always a threat with a tremendous support game.
