The Cairns Taipans will be looking to bounce back from their first home defeat of the NBL27 season when they host the Illawarra Hawks at the Cairns Convention Centre on Thursday night. With both teams coming off contrasting results against Melbourne and Perth, this Round 8 clash shapes as an important opportunity to build momentum.
Cairns have been one of the competition's surprise performers, winning five of their past seven games to sit at 6-5. However, their defensive vulnerabilities were exposed in Saturday's loss to Melbourne, and they'll face another stern test against an Illawarra side fresh from an impressive road victory over the Wildcats.
The Hawks have struggled for consistency throughout their 3-8 start, but their talented frontcourt could cause problems for a Cairns team that was dominated on the offensive boards in their first meeting. The Taipans won that encounter 110-100 in Wollongong, and they'll be hoping home-court advantage can help them complete the season double. We break down the matchup, our best bet and a three-leg Dabble Pick'Em selection below.

Cairns Taipans Looking to Bounce Back at Home
Cairns’ unbeaten home start ended with Saturday’s 113-97 loss to Melbourne. They led 54-51 at half-time before the game slipped away in the third quarter, leaving them at 6-5. It was a disappointing result, but five wins from their past seven games suggests there is no need to panic.
Turnovers and foul trouble made that assignment harder than it needed to be. Keanu Pinder fouled out after just 18 minutes, leaving Cairns short of an important scoring option and rebounder. They need him on the floor against Illawarra’s big men, particularly given the problems the Hawks caused on the offensive glass in their first meeting.
Jack McVeigh remains central to Cairns’ chances, with his scoring and passing helping create opportunities for their outside shooters. The Taipans have shown they can score enough to win this matchup. Getting stops and finishing those defensive possessions with a rebound will be just as important.
Illawarra Hawks Trying to Build Some Momentum
Illawarra gave themselves something to build on with Saturday’s 105-98 win in Perth. Kelan Martin scored 23 points and Makur Maker added 21, but the way they finished was particularly encouraging. After giving up a 15-point lead, the Hawks recovered to take control late.
The challenge is producing that effort again. Their previous win over Melbourne was followed by heavy home defeats against Sydney and Brisbane, and their 3-8 record reflects that inconsistency. Opponents are shooting 50% from the field against them this season, so there is still plenty to fix defensively.
Cairns took advantage in the first meeting, making 18 three-pointers in a 110-100 win in Wollongong. However, Illawarra won the offensive-rebound count 13-3, with Sam Froling and Maker both productive inside. That gives the Hawks a clear avenue to attack, provided they do a better job of defending Cairns’ shooters.
Taipans vs Hawks Betting Tips
I’m backing Cairns -2.5. Their recent form has been more dependable, and they have won three of their four home games. Illawarra deserve credit for winning in Perth, but we have already seen them struggle to back up a good result.
The Taipans cannot rely on another 18-three night to get them home. Keeping Pinder out of foul trouble and limiting second-chance points would take some pressure off their shooting, while McVeigh gives them someone they can turn to when the offence stalls.
I expect a competitive game, particularly if the Hawks get their big men involved early. Still, I prefer Cairns at home and think their scoring options give them enough to cover the small line.
