EPL 2026-27: Matchday 5 Preview & Betting Tips

Brentford vs Chelsea

Gtech Community Stadium, Saturday 19th September 5:00am AEST

Matchday 5 kicks off with a pivotal West London clash between Brentford and Chelsea. Chelsea are in sixth place while Brentford are seventh with a win giving either side the opportunity to jump into the top four. Chelsea played in another high scoring affair last week, in a 2-2 draw with Hull. After a win on Matchday 1 Brentford have stagnated, recording three consecutive draws, with their most recent performance clinging to a 2-2 scoreline against Bournemouth despite losing the shot count 18-5.

Kevin Schade has been excellent for Brentford to start the season, scoring three goals including a brilliant brace last week to keep them afloat. The Bees are dealing with a big injury list missing captain Nathan Collins, Mathias Jensen, Sepp van den Berg, Antoni Milambo and Josh Dasilva. Chelsea on the other hand have a near clean bill of health, giving them the ability to execute the style of play Xabi Alonso is looking to implement early in his reign.

Chelsea have played in high scoring games this season with scorelines of 2-3, 4-3, 2-1, 2-2. Xabi Alonso will be eager to make this a free flowing affair given the blueprint that Bournemouth showed last week. Brentford will give opportunities for Chelsea to dominate possession and play the game in their front third, however Brentford have been an efficient side in attack. Chelsea have been vulnerable in defence this season, so all signs point towards another high scoring affair in West London.

Brighton vs Arsenal

American Express Stadium, Sunday 20th September, 12:00am AEST

It’s first versus fifth as league leaders Arsenal travel south to take on Brighton in a clash that will have ramifications at the top of the table. Brighton have a 2-1-1 record through four games after their 5-0 win over Coventry last weekend. The Seagulls have been an attacking juggernaut through the opening month of the season, scoring a league high 13 goals.

The defending champions produced a typical Arsenal performance last week, with a rock solid defence and an efficient performance in the front third, to make it four wins from four games. After being the best defence in the league across the last two seasons, the Gunners have continued that trend, conceding just one goal this season - the fewest in the league. Going on the road won’t be an issue for Mikel Arteta's side, who were the best away team in the league last season with an 11-5-3 record.

Styles make fights and this is a fascinating watch between the number one defence versus the number one attack in the league. Arsenal had a similar matchup earlier this season against Chelsea and managed to blanket them, as they have managed to do for the best part of two seasons. Arsenal have well and truly had Brighton covered in recent seasons, with 4 wins and 2 draws in their last six Premier League fixtures against the Seagulls.

Manchester City vs Sunderland

Etihad Stadium, Sunday 20th September, 11:00pm AEST

Manchester City and Sunderland face off at the Etihad, with Sunderland looking to get their season back on track after picking up just one win from four games. Manchester City continued their perfect start to the season with a controversial win in the Manchester Derby last week. Erling Haaland’s winner in the 60th minute was later clarified as an incorrect decision by the Premier League, however City won’t be stressed, sitting second on the table with four wins.

Sunderland’s inability to be an attacking threat in the final third will be exposed in this fixture. The Black Cats have only scored three goals so far this season, which isn’t great form coming up against City who are the second best defence (2 goals conceded) and the third ranked attack (8 goals scored). Haaland has led the way for City’s attack, scoring a league best 4 goals. Rayan Cherki and Phil Foden have played crucial roles as well, both registering 2 assists.

Manchester City have dominated this matchup, recording seven wins and one draw from their last eight league fixtures against Sunderland. Their last two wins have come by scorelines of 2-0 and 3-0, so the handicap market is certainly the place to go in this fixture. The gap in talent in all three phases of the game will simply be too much for a struggling Sunderland to overcome, as their form slump will continue and City’s perfect record will remain.
