Sunday afternoon at Jubilee Stadium brings together the bottom two sides on the ladder, but this is a far more interesting betting matchup than the standings suggest. The Dragons have improved significantly since Dean Young took control and pushed the Warriors throughout last week’s 20-12 loss in Auckland. Gold Coast, however, arrive after producing one of their best attacking performances of the season in a 38-32 upset of Manly.
The market has installed St George Illawarra as a narrow favourite, but I believe it has the wrong team on top. The Dragons are playing with more effort and structure, yet they remain one of the competition’s least reliable attacking sides. Gold Coast possess considerably more natural points through Keano Kini, Jayden Campbell, AJ Brimson and Zane Harrison.
The Titans have maintained a relatively stable squad after last week’s win, while the Dragons also avoid major disruption. Dean Young’s new coaching agreement should provide some organisational stability, but it does not immediately resolve the side’s attacking limitations.
At plus money, the Titans are the betting selection. Neither team inspires complete trust, but Gold Coast have the higher scoring ceiling and the greater ability to recover if they fall behind.

Dragons Competitive Without Finding Enough Points
The Dragons’ 20-12 loss to the Warriors continued their recent improvement despite delivering another defeat. St George Illawarra travelled to Auckland fresh from the bye and pushed the second placed Warriors throughout, remaining within striking distance until late in the contest. New Zealand were forced to play patiently and could not produce the type of blowout many expected.
That performance reinforced the progress made under Dean Young. The Dragons are defending with greater cohesion, their young forwards are competing for longer periods and the senior spine is providing more organisation. Clint Gutherson continues to set standards from fullback, Damien Cook gives them speed around the ruck and Kyle Flanagan has been more effective when the team plays through field position. The concern though remains exactly the same: where do enough points come from?
St George Illawarra have improved by becoming more conservative and disciplined, but that approach leaves little margin for error. If the Dragons concede three or four tries, they often lack the attacking variety to chase the game. Their best performances have depended on high completion rates, strong kicking and converting a small number of good ball opportunities.
Moses Suli and Valentine Holmes provide some edge strike, while Gutherson can create numbers through the middle. However, the Dragons are still too dependent on individual moments rather than repeatable attacking pressure.
Young’s new agreement provides welcome stability and may assist with the retention of the club’s emerging forwards, particularly the Couchman brothers and Loko Pasifiki Tonga. That is positive for the club’s future, but this week’s handicap concerns a side that still struggles to build a winning score.
Against Gold Coast, the Dragons should compete physically. Whether they can score enough to justify favouritism is another question.
Titans Finally Convert Attacking Promise
Gold Coast’s 38-32 victory over Manly was one of the more entertaining games of Round 20 and another reminder that the Titans possess far more attacking talent than their ladder position suggests. They produced six tries, survived a late Sea Eagles challenge, and secured an upset against a team fighting for a finals position.
Jojo Fifita scored twice, while Oliver Pascoe also crossed for a double in a performance that highlighted Gold Coast’s ability to create points through multiple avenues. Keano Kini remained heavily involved from fullback, Jayden Campbell challenged the defensive line and Zane Harrison continued to develop as the organising half.
The Titans are still inconsistent, particularly defensively. Conceding 32 points meant they needed almost everything to work in attack, and that is not a sustainable formula every week. However, this matchup is significantly more forgiving. The Dragons do not possess Manly’s strike power and are unlikely to repeatedly expose Gold Coast’s defensive weaknesses in the same way.
Tino Fa’asuamaleaui and Moeaki Fotuaika should give the Titans enough middle strength to match the Dragons’ young pack. If Gold Coast avoid gifting St George Illawarra short fields, their advantage in attacking talent should eventually become decisive.
Kini is the primary difference maker. The Dragons defend with greater effort than earlier in the season, but they can still struggle when forced to handle speed through the middle and second phase movement. Kini’s support play and willingness to attack retreating defenders can create opportunities that the Dragons simply do not possess at the same level.
Gold Coast have beaten stronger teams than St George Illawarra this year, including Penrith and Manly. Their problem has never been a complete lack of talent; it has been maintaining standards across 80 minutes. Against the Dragons, their attacking ceiling provides the stronger betting argument.
Dragons vs Titans Recent History
The Titans won the earlier meeting this season, beating the Dragons 22-14 at Cbus Super Stadium in Round 4. Gold Coast controlled the most important periods and secured their first win of 2026, while St George Illawarra again struggled to generate enough points despite remaining competitive. The Dragons dominated the 2025 meeting, winning 38-16 at WIN Stadium.

The Dragons have had the better of this recent rivalry, however the Titans were the better team in round 4 and know what it takes to beat this version of the Dragons.
Wrong Team Favoured at Jubilee
There are valid reasons the market has sided with the Dragons. They are at home; their performances have improved, and Gold Coast remain unreliable defensively. St George Illawarra should also be fresher after a controlled game in Auckland, while the Titans were involved in a high tempo shootout.
Even accounting for those factors, I cannot make the Dragons favourites.
The largest difference between the sides is attacking ceiling. Gold Coast can score through Kini, Campbell, Brimson, Harrison, Fifita and their powerful middle forwards. The Dragons need far more structure and field position to create the same scoreboard pressure.
That matters particularly if the Titans score first. St George Illawarra are far better when controlling a low scoring game than when forced to chase. Their improved defence can keep them close, but their attack does not provide confidence if Gold Coast reaches the mid-20s.
The Titans’ defensive inconsistency is the obvious risk. They allowed Manly to score 32 last week and have repeatedly surrendered momentum after establishing strong positions. If they reproduce that lack of discipline, Gutherson, Cook and Holmes can make them pay.
However, the Dragons have not shown enough attacking quality to justify assuming they will exploit every Gold Coast mistake. Their win conditions remain narrow: complete high, control territory and keep the game below approximately 40 total points.
Gold Coast have more paths to victory. They can grind through Tino and Fotuaika, attack with speed through Kini or produce points from broken play through Campbell and Brimson. That variety is why I make them the narrow favourite.
This is not a match for a huge bet. Both teams sit near the bottom for a reason, and either could produce an error filled performance. But when the market offers plus money on the side with the better attacking profile, I am happy to take it.
The Dragons’ improvement should keep this competitive. The Titans’ superior ability to create points should ultimately decide it.
