Essendon vs GWS Prediction & Betting Tips: AFL 2026 Round 19
The Bombers' Grim Reality
Essendon returns to Marvel Stadium this Sunday afternoon anchored firmly to the bottom of the ladder. Sitting in 18th position with a 1-16 record, the Bombers are simply trying to navigate the remainder of a dismal 2026 campaign. They are coming off a brutal 90-point thrashing at the hands of Brisbane last weekend, which further highlighted the defensive vulnerabilities that have plagued them all year. With only pride left to play for, the focus for Essendon is entirely on limiting the damage and trying to find some stability in front of their home fans.
Giants Pushing for Finals
The Giants travel to Melbourne needing to bank a crucial win. Sitting 11th on the ladder (coming into the round) with an 8-9 record, the Giants remain squarely in the mix for the top 10 or potentially top 6 and carry good momentum after a huge comeback victory over Geelong last weekend. Importantly, the Giants have shown the ability to take down the best sides this season, although have also taken their foot off the gas against lower teams. Simple put, for a side harbouring genuine finals ambitions, travelling to face the bottom-ranked team is a must-win scenario to keep their September hopes alive.
The Round 9 Blueprint
These two sides previously met back in Round 9 at ENGIE Stadium, where GWS secured a 14-point victory, winning 103 to 89. While Essendon was competitive on the scoreboard that day, their form has significantly deteriorated in the months since. The Bombers have also now lost 20 consecutive games in Victroria which is tragic for their diehard fans who continue to turn up each week.
What to Expect?
The tip for this clash is the total points to go under 179.5, albeit with low confidence. While Essendon has conceded a league-high number of points this season, their own scoring output has been incredibly poor, as they managed just 59 points last week against the Lions. On top of that, the last eight matches the Bombers have been involved in have averaged just 155 points.
GWS has the structure to restrict the Bombers, and a completely one-sided match often leads to a slower scoring rate late in the game. It is a difficult total to confidently predict given Essendon's defensive record, making a smaller stake the sensible approach.

Essendon vs GWS Prop Bet
There aren’t too many good value plays from a prop bet perspective in this matchup, but one of the better plays looks to be Archie Roberts for 30+ disposals. He returned from a shoulder injury last week with 23 disposals but should return to his accumulating best with a game under his belt. Prior to his injury he was one of the highest accumulators in the league, recording 30+ in eight of his nine matches. Good odds with the role still intact.
Archie Roberts 30+ Disposals

Essendon vs GWS Same Game Multi
GWS to Win: Clearly not much juice with this play, but it looks like a layup considering the Bombers are one of the worst teams we’ve ever seen in the modern era.
Toby Greene 3+ Goals: Soft matchup for Giants forwards which makes this a nice leg. 10 goals in his four matches prior to last week and should get plenty of looks in this one.
Archie Roberts 30+ Disposals: The Giants should be dominating this match which only helps Roberts’ numbers considering he’s the primary kick-in option for the Bombers.
