Melbourne vs GWS Prediction & Betting Tips: AFL 2026 Round 12
Giants Finding Their Swagger
GWS reminded everyone last week just how dangerous they can be when their pressure game clicks into gear. Their demolition of Brisbane was built around relentless contest work and devastating transition play, with the Giants piling on 14 unanswered goals during a remarkable third-quarter blitz.
Toby Greene was at his brilliant best with five goals, while Clayton Oliver, Finn Callaghan and Lachie Ash completely took over through the midfield. Importantly, the Giants get even stronger this week with Lachie Whitfield and Sam Taylor both returning to the side. Whitfield’s run and ball use completely changes the way GWS move the footy, while Taylor’s return stabilises a defence that can sometimes look vulnerable against strong key forwards.
The Giants have now won the past three meetings against Melbourne and historically match up extremely well against the Demons’ style. Their ability to pressure opposition ball carriers and force rushed decisions becomes even more dangerous in the unique conditions of Alice Springs, where territory and transition defence are absolutely critical.
Demons Dangerous Despite Recent Loss
Melbourne might have lost narrowly to the Bulldogs last week, but there was still plenty to like about their performance. They remained competitive all day and nearly pinched the game late despite some poor execution under pressure.
Kysaiah Pickett continues to evolve into one of the most influential players in the competition, impacting games both through the midfield and forward line. Max Gawn remains the cornerstone of Melbourne’s contested game, while Tom Sparrow, Ed Langdon and Harvey Langford have all been important contributors throughout the season.
The Demons have built their resurgence around contest dominance and pressure, but the concern coming into this matchup is how they handle GWS once the Giants start generating turnover opportunities. Melbourne were exposed at times last week when the Bulldogs applied heat around the ball, and GWS are one of the league’s best sides at punishing mistakes in transition.
Demons or Giants? Here’s our Sydney vs Richmond Tip
The Giants looked frighteningly close to their best last week against Brisbane and now welcome back two hugely important pieces in Lachie Whitfield and Sam Taylor. That combination of confidence, pressure and ball movement gives them enormous upside heading into this clash.
Melbourne have been excellent this season and deserve their spot inside the top eight, but this feels like a difficult matchup stylistically. The Giants’ speed, turnover game and ability to generate territory pressure shapes as a genuine issue for the Demons, particularly in Alice Springs conditions where momentum can snowball quickly.

Melbourne vs GWS Prop Bet
With Jesse Hogan unavailable, the opportunity deep forward opens right up for Aaron Cadman, who continues to show enormous growth in 2026. The young key forward has kicked nine goals across his past five games, including three against Brisbane last week, and looks increasingly confident as the focal point inside 50.
Melbourne’s defence also loses some stability without Jake Lever, which could allow Cadman to get favourable matchups one-on-one closer to goal.

Pickett remains Melbourne’s most dynamic midfield weapon and has now recorded 20+ disposals in seven of his last nine games, including 25 against the Bulldogs last round.
