A-League 2025-26: Finals Week 1 Preview & Betting Tips
Auckland FC vs Melbourne City
Go Media Stadium, Saturday 2nd May, 3:00pm AEST
Adelaide United’s stoppage time winner against Melbourne City last week changed the course of both Auckland and Melbourne City’s fortunes, with Auckland falling to third and City remaining in sixth. The Black Knights missed out on the double chance and now face an Elimination Final against the defending champions, who have won four out of their last five games. On the contrary, Auckland have hit a wall at the wrong time of the season, going winless in their last five games.
This matchup pits two of the strongest defensive sides in the competition, with Auckland FC ranking as the second best defence in the league, while Melbourne City are ranked equal third. Auckland FC have been a significantly better attacking side than City across the season, scoring nine more goals than the defending champs, and they’ll need that attacking quality to lift come Saturday afternoon. The two meetings between the sides have been split this season, with both City and Auckland winning a game each.
The last meeting between the two sides was in late February at Go Media Stadium, where Auckland triumphed in convincing fashion, with a 3-0 win. The blueprint from that game is what the Black Knights will be looking to follow, they didn’t allow City to dominate the possession battle, almost breaking even, which gave Auckland great looks in attack as they were able to register 17 shots on goal with 10 on target. Go Media Stadium has been a nightmare venue for Melbourne City, with their two games in Auckland both resulting in 3-0 defeats. The Black Knights will learn from their heartbreak in last season’s finals series, and they will get the job done at home within 90 minutes.

Melbourne Victory vs Sydney FC
AAMI Park, Saturday 2nd May, 7:40pm AEST
The A-League’s two most successful clubs add another chapter to their legendary rival when they meet in an Elimination Final on Saturday night. Melbourne Victory leapfrogged Sydney FC into fourth position after their 2-0 win over the Wanderers last week, earning the right to host this match. The Victory were boosted by Juan Mata’s return to the side last week, playing the final ten minutes of the game upon a remarkably quick comeback from a fractured elbow.
Mata has been arguably the most dominant player in the competition this season, with 13 assists and 5 goals from 24 appearances, the most goal involvements of any player in the A-League. If the World Cup winner can put together a good finals series, the Victory have a chance to go far. Sydney’s formline has been far from impressive heading into the finals, with just one win from their last seven games, including plenty of points dropped against teams near the bottom of the table.
This season’s three Big Blue’s have resulted in a win, a draw and a loss for each team, with home ground advantage playing a key factor. When these sides last met at AAMI Park, the Victory steam rolled to a dominant 4-0 win back in January. Melbourne Victory have had a great record at home against the Sky Blues, winning three of their last four home games against Sydney, with scorelines of 4-0, 2-0 and 3-0. The Sky Blues have struggled for attacking potency this year, ranking 9th for goals scored, so if the Victory can turn this into a free flowing affair, they should pick up a win at home.
