T20 World Cup Semi Finals Preview & Betting Tips

South Africa vs New Zealand

Kolkata, Thursday, 12.30am (AEDT)

South Africa arrive in Kolkata unbeaten and brimming with belief, seven wins from seven and a squad that looks hardened rather than haunted by past near-misses. Aiden Markram has led superbly, highlighted by his unbeaten 86 against New Zealand in the group stage when they chased 176 with ease, and this side feels far more complete than the one that fell agonisingly short in the 2024 final. With a core of players who lifted the World Test Championship last year, there is steel to complement the flair of Quinton de Kock, David Miller and the ever-influential Marco Jansen, while their bowling unit has been disciplined in all phases.

New Zealand, by contrast, have had to scrap their way into the semi-finals. Mitchell Santner’s men lost to England in the Super Eights and relied on net run rate to edge into the final four, though that in itself speaks to their resilience. They remain a dangerous knockout opponent, with Finn Allen capable of explosive starts and Santner controlling the middle overs, but they have already been comfortably beaten by South Africa in this tournament and will need a far sharper performance with both bat and ball to flip the script.

South Africa simply look the more balanced and confident outfit right now. They’ve already shown they can chase New Zealand down under pressure, they’ve handled high-scoring contests and tight finishes, and crucially they’ve shaken the mental scars of the past. Expect them to absorb the early intensity and then assert control through the middle overs. South Africa to win and book a place in the final.

England vs India

Mumbai, Friday, 12.30am (AEDT)

India head into the Mumbai semi-final carrying enormous expectation as defending champions and the top-ranked T20 side in the world. They stumbled early in the Super Eights with a loss to South Africa but have responded emphatically, blasting 256 against Zimbabwe and chasing 196 against the West Indies thanks to Sanju Samson’s unbeaten 97. Suryakumar Yadav remains the heartbeat of the batting order, and with depth extending through the middle alongside a varied bowling attack, India have shown they can thrive when their backs are against the wall.

England, though, are peaking at the perfect time. Harry Brook has taken ownership of the side, moving to number three and striking a superb century in a composed chase of 165 against Pakistan. They won all three of their Super Eight matches and look increasingly settled in their roles. Having already played group games in Mumbai, they will be comfortable with the Wankhede surface, and their blend of aggressive top-order batting and experienced white-ball operators gives them the tools to silence a partisan crowd.

India’s talent is undeniable and their recent resurgence has reminded everyone why they’re the top-ranked T20 side, but history still lingers. Despite pockets of recent success, they’ve too often stumbled at the knockout hurdle in ICC events, and England have repeatedly been the side to expose them on the biggest stage. With Brook’s men peaking at the right time, carrying momentum and far less external pressure, this shapes as another uncomfortable chapter for the hosts. If England handle the early storm in Mumbai, they have the composure and big-game pedigree to strike again. Back England to upset India and reach the final.
