Living On The Edge, Again
For the fifth time in the last six seasons, the Western Bulldogs have come into the final round of the season needing a win to secure a place in the top eight. The Dogs have been successful in this scenario, making it to the finals in four of those five seasons. After Round 22 things looked in brilliant shape for Fremantle, they snuck over the line against the Power which had them sitting in the top four with just two games remaining. However a horrendous loss at home last week puts the Dockers in a must win game to play Finals. Last season the Dockers dropped their final four games of the season to miss out on the top eight, and twelve months later they will face a similar fate if they don’t win on Sunday.
The Stats That Matter
Luke Beveridge’s side will be looking to turn this into a shootout under the roof at Docklands. The Bulldogs are the highest scoring team in the competition averaging 108 points per game, and have been able to be such an offensive power because of the strength of their midfield. The Dogs rank 1st for disposals, 1st for clearances, 2nd for inside 50’s and 4th for marks. They win the ball at the source and control proceedings around the ground, giving their forwards plenty of supply.
The Dockers will look to make the game slow and controlled, like other top eight sides have done with success against the Dogs this year. The Bulldogs are 2-8 against the top nine teams this season with their only two wins coming against the Giants.

The Bulldogs come in as favourites, given the game being at Marvel and their ability to win these sudden death games in previous seasons, that is fair. However their struggles against the better sides in the competition can’t be ignored, and their recent record against the Dockers isn’t great either, winning just three of their last seven against Fremantle.
That’s why we’ll be taking the Dockers at the line, +20.5 is a nice buffer for a side that has a red hot chance of winning this game and has already beaten the Bulldogs earlier this season.
