Match Preview
The Eagles are still winless in 2025, sitting on the bottom of the ladder with a 0-9 record through their opening few months. They are averaging just 66.3 points per game, by far the lowest in the league, and allowing a league high 108.7. In saying that, they have been agonisingly close to recording their first win multiple times over the last month.
They went down by just two points to the Bombers back in Round 6 before losing to the Tigers by just two points again on the weekend. While there are certainly signs of improvement, there doesn’t seem to be an immediate end to the Eagles torture, as rumours of star youngster Harley Reid departing at the end of the season continue to dominate headlines.
The Saints were coming off a solid win over the Dockers when they faced the Blues on Friday Night Football in Round 9. In a defensive slugfest, it was the Blues who came out on top on the back of a dominant midfield display, moving the Saints to 4-5 on the season and currently sitting in 12th place.
The Saints have, however, had a difficult run to start the season. Six of their nine games have come against 2024 finalists as well as a trip to Adelaide against the Crows. They finally get some respite this week, albeit coming in the form of a cross country flight, but they do start as heavy favourites against the Eagles.
Mattaes Phillipou made his season debut for the Saints last week and added another dimension to the forward line, booting two goals in the loss. They could be in line to get more key players back this week as Mason Wood and Dan Butler will both push for selection.
I think the Saints should get the job done here. They have traditionally not been a great travelling team, but have seemed to buck that trend in recent history against the Eagles. They were 72 point winners against West Coast in Melbourne last season, but their previous three matches all came at Optus, where the Saints were 3-0 by an average margin of 16.6 points.

Liam Duggan 20+ Disposals - The Eagles veteran had a solid game last week, racking up 20 touches against the Tigers in a close loss. Has passed that mark just three times this season but the Saints love giving up cheap possessions on switches across half back, preferring to set up forward of the ball. Back Duggan to be busy here.
Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera 25+ Disposals - Is one of the All-Australian half backs at the moment after a stellar season to date. Averaging 27.7 on the season and has had at least 25 touches in each of his last four straight games.
Cooper Sharman 2+ Goals - Has been a real aerial threat for the Saints over the last few weeks and should get plenty of opportunity here if the Saints are going to put up a big score against the leakiest defence in the comp. Has kicked six in his last two games.
SGM Odds: $4.60 at BoomBet
