West Coast have an opportunity to get their first win of the season when they head to the MCG to take on Richmond. It’s a rare opportunity for both clubs who’ve had tough starts to the season, so expect both sides to come out desperate in this match.

Match Preview

West Coast will make at least two changes to their side from Round 8, with Jeremy McGovern out with concussion and Bo Allan suspended. Sandy Brock, Ned Long, Tom Gross, Bailey Williams and Harry Edwards have been named in Sunday’s extended squad.

Maurice Rioli (omitted) is the only confirmed out for Richmond, with Tom Sims confirmed to make his debut. Kane McAuliffe, Jasper Alger and Tyler Sonsie round out the inclusions for the extended squad.

West Coast missed one of their biggest opportunities for a win this season, going down by 32 points at home against Melbourne. The Eagles took a six point lead into half time, but conceded seven goals to two in the third quarter, which proved to be the difference in the result.

The Eagles were smashed at clearances (-23) and contested possessions (-17) which led to a -16 difference for inside 50’s. The loss leaves West Coast with an 0-8 record, however given this is one of very few games this season they are a genuine chance of winning, expect a desperate West Coast outfit on Sunday.

After a competitive fortnight across Rounds 6 and 7, Richmond were given a lesson by Hawthorn in a 65 point loss last week. The Tigers showed some promising signs in the first quarter with their ability to generate front half turnovers and get repeat inside 50’s, however they fell away after quarter time.

It’s hard to find many positives from a statistical profile standpoint given the Tigers are 2-6 and West Coast are 0-8, the two sides are 17th and 18th in points for, disposals and clearances.

A key for Richmond will be their efficiency inside 50, in their two wins this season they’ve turned 37.5 % and 45.2% of their inside 50’s into scores. With Jeremy McGovern out for West Coast, it gives Richmond a golden opportunity to stretch a West Coast’s defence that has conceded the most points per game in the competition.

The Eagles have conceded 100+ points in six of their eight games this season, with four scores of 120+ conceded.

The home of footy has been a happy hunting ground for West Coast in recent seasons, losing their last five games at the MCG by an average margin of 41 points. The Eagles haven’t won at the MCG since 2021, and it’s tough to see them turning things around on Sunday.

This certainly won’t be the game of the season, but the Tigers have shown an ability to be competitive for longer stretches of games than West Coast. Taranto and Hopper’s experience in the middle will give Richmond advantage in the territory battle, and their key forwards will be too much for the inexperienced Eagles defence to stop. The Tigers have won four of the last five meetings between the two clubs, and they’ll add another loss to West Coast’s record.

Richmond -13.5

Tim Taranto 25+ Disposals: Despite playing in a struggling outfit, Tim Taranto is having a solid season, averaging 25 disposals per game. Taranto has reached the 25+ mark in 4 of his last 5 games, and has produced performances of 27 and 30 disposals in his last two games against West Coast.

Jacob Hopper 25+ Disposals: Much like Taranto, Hopper is leading the way for the Tigers, averaging 26.8 disposals per game. Hopper has recorded 25+ disposals in 5 of his past 6 games.

Ryan Maric 25+ Disposals: Maric has been given the dream role in a poor side, getting to be the half back distributor and taking kick ins. Maric has taken 51 kick ins this season, 26 more than any other Eagle, and it’s helping with Maric hitting the 25+ disposal mark in his last two games.

SGM Odds: $4.33 at BoomBet
