Match Preview
The final game of Round 8 shapes as one of the most anticipated QClashes in years, with both Brisbane and Gold Coast sitting inside the top four and a spot at the top of the ladder up for grabs. Brisbane come into this one in second, with the Suns just behind in third, and while both clubs are in strong form, history suggests this might follow a familiar script.
The Lions have absolutely dominated this rivalry in recent years, winning 11 of the past 12 meetings between the two sides. Gold Coast haven’t won at the Gabba in their last nine attempts, and the Lions have shown time and again that they love turning up the heat at home. Last season, Brisbane took care of business in both encounters, winning by 34 and 28 points respectively, and they’ll come into this one full of confidence that they can keep that trend rolling.
That said, the Suns aren’t the easybeats they used to be. They’ve started 2025 in impressive fashion, playing with greater consistency and grit. There’s a real edge to them now, and they’ll be desperate to not only break their Gabba hoodoo, but to make a statement that they’re a genuine top-four side. Still, beating Brisbane at home is a challenge that’s proven too big for many in recent years.
The Lions haven’t been flawless this season, but they’ve done enough to sit comfortably near the top of the ladder, and they rarely let games like this slip — especially in front of a home crowd. While Gold Coast will no doubt bring intensity and try to rattle the Lions early, Brisbane have been here before, and they know how to wrestle back momentum when it matters most.
This should be a fast, physical clash with a finals-like atmosphere. The Suns will push hard and might even lead at stages, but Brisbane’s experience, composure, and record at the Gabba can’t be ignored. In the end, it feels like another QClash where the Lions do enough to pull away late and stamp their place at the top of the ladder.
