Cairns Taipans vs Brisbane Bullets

Friday 7:30pm AEDT, December 1st, Cairns Convention Centre

The Taipans would be champing at the bit to return to action this week after heading into the break on a sour note. Both of their Round 8 losses were tough pills to swallow, particularly their second one against the JackJumpers which they lost in overtime. The Taipans have now lost four of their last five games, although three of those losses have come on the road. They’ve been much more effective at home this campaign with wins in 3/4 of their games. Meanwhile, the Bullets will also be keen to get back onto the court in Round 9 after heading into the international break on a three-game slide. This is their second such losing streak already in NBL24 which would be concerning for new coach Justin Shueller. Snapping their current losing streak will be no easy feat however as they’ll have to do it on the road where they’ve lost two in a row and four of their past five. Unfortunately, I expect the Bullets to taste defeat on the road once again when they take on an almost full-strength Taipans outfit.

SE Melbourne Phoenix vs New Zealand Breakers

Saturday 5:30pm AEDT, December 2nd, John Cain Arena

The South East Melbourne Phoenix will be raring to go on Saturday night after they went into the international break with a bitter taste in their mouth. The Phoenix lost their most recent outing against the 36ers by three points, making it three losses from their last four games. Importantly, they now return to John Cain Arena where they’ve won five of their last six games. In contrast, the Breakers have been on the improve in recent games with two wins from their last three games. It’s been a tough start to the campaign for last season’s runners-up, but maybe now they’re finally starting to find their feet. In saying that, the Breakers have found it difficult on the road this season with only one win from five attempts. They still haven’t shown enough for me to have any confidence in them whatsoever, particularly on the offensive end. The Breakers have only averaged 83.6ppg across their past five games, and I don’t like their chances over eclipsing their current total points line which has been set at 87.5 points.

Tasmania JackJumpers vs Adelaide 36ers

Saturday 8pm AEDT, December 2nd, MyState Bank Arena

The JackJumpers have been good without being great so far in NBL24, but the foundation is there and you certainly can’t write them off for the championship. They split their two games in Round 8 with a loss against the Breakers and a win against the Taipans, taking their record to 7-5 which is the third best mark in the league. Meanwhile, the 36ers have already played once in Round 9, losing to the Breakers on the road by 13 points on Thursday night. The 36ers have now lost two in a row on their travels and five of six on the road overall. Unfortunately, they remain on the road on Saturday when they travel to Tasmania, which has proven to be one of the toughest places to win for travelling sides in recent times. The JackJumpers have won each of their last two games against the 36ers by double-figures, including an 82-72 win in Adelaide just three weeks ago. They continue to have the edge in this matchup and should be winning comfortably on Saturday night.

Tasmania JackJumpers -6.5

$1.80 (1.5 Units)

Brisbane Bullets vs Illawarra Hawks

Sunday 4pm AEDT, December 3rd, Nissan Arena

The Brisbane Bullets were able to come away with scrappy road win in their first game post break to reignite some life into their campaign. They managed to do so without any meaningful offensive input from their star players, which is a big plus. They’ll now look to make it 2/2 in Round 9 when they return home to play hosts to the Illawarra Hawks. The Hawks have had a horrible beginning to the season after finishing with the Wooden Spoon in NBL23. The expectation was that having a fully fit Jerome Robinson would bring about significant improvement on the offensive side of the ball, but that simply hasn’t been the case with Robinson severely struggling shooting the ball and finishing inside. The Hawks had a great deal to work on in the week off and it’ll be interesting to see how they perform first up, however, their performances to date certainly don’t lead to much optimism. Instead, I fancy the Bullets to defend home court on Sunday and to come away with another much-needed win as they look to ascend up the standings.

Brisbane Bullets -5.5
