With their backs against the wall, the Timberwolves were able to pull out a win in Dallas in Game 4 to keep their season alive. They lost the first three games of this best-of-seven Western Conference Finals series, and were finally able to open their account on Wednesday.
The next test for the Timberwolves is to defend homecourt, which they obviously failed to do in Games 1 & 2. They lost by three points in G1 and one point in G2 despite leading by six points at quarter time on each occasion.
In fact, the Timberwolves have now lost four of their past five home playoff games. This is highly unusual for the #3 seeds, especially considering they were 30-11 on their home deck in the regular season.
Regardless, the Timberwolves will go in as favourites on Friday morning. Their opponents, the Mavericks, are dealing with a couple of injuries to key players. Luka Doncic has been banged up all series but had a noticeable limp in G4, while rookie big man Dereck Lively missed Wednesday’s game with a neck strain. Both guys are currently listed as ‘questionable’ to suit up in Minnesota.
The Timberwolves got the monkey off their back last start and look well poised to double the dose on Friday. They have a health advantage as well as homecourt, and I expect them to deliver another win in this do-or-die situation.
