Hawthorn vs Adelaide Predictions & Tips: 2025 AFL Round 14
Are The Hawks Back?
After three straight losses, the pressure was piling up on Hawthorn, but they responded in fine fashion with a 22-point win over the Bulldogs last week. After recording just 36 and 38 tackles in Rounds 11 and 12, the Hawks came out with huge intent without the ball, laying 58 tackles. The return of Hawthorn’s pressure game saw their best return for scores from turnover in a month (47 points), with Conor Nash (7 tackles) and Connor Macdonald (7) leading the way. The big question is can the Hawks back it up against another top eight team, which is something they’ve struggled with this season.
Are The Crows The Real Deal?
Sometimes football can come down to fine margins, which lead to expansive judgements on teams. The Crows looked set to fail another test against a top four side when they trailed Brisbane by 17 points at three-quarter time last week. A remarkable blitz at the start of the fourth quarter saw the Crows kick five goals in eleven minutes to go two goals in front. However Adelaide would spend the final eight minutes in their defensive 50, with Brisbane peppering the goals. Ultimately Brisbane’s inaccuracy allowed the Crows to hold onto a five point victory, which was their first win against a side in the current top five. A trip to Tasmania against the Hawks will be another test for Adelaide’s status as a genuine contender in season 2025.
Stats That Matter
Adelaide have been absolutely electric in the front half this season, being the highest scoring team in the AFL this season averaging 101 points per game. The Crows have been a high kicking team ranking third in the competition for kicks and fifth for inside 50’s. Adelaide have been an incredibly efficient side inside 50, ranking equal first in the competition for goals per inside 50. The Crows rank 1st for scores from defensive half, third for scores from kick in, fifth for scores from forward half, fifth for scores from centre bounce, and seventh for scores from stoppages.
Hawthorn have been reliant from going end to end, ranking first for scores from kick-in, and third for going from defensive 50 to scoring. Hawthorn’s clearance work is a major concern though, ranking 16th in the competition for clearances, only ahead of Richmond and West Coast.
Hawks or Crows? Who Wins the Battle of the Birds?
On current formlines the Crows would be an easy pick, however given this game will be played on a cold winter’s night in Tasmania, it’s hard to pick against the Hawks. Since 2001, Hawthorn has won 62 of 82 games at UTAS Stadium and are currently on a 7-game winning streak in Launceston. Hawthorn also won both meetings against Adelaide last season and have won 4 of their last 6 games against the Crows.
Hawthorn plays the conditions so well in Launceston, and after getting back to their best football last week, they should be able to get enough pressure around the ball to nullify Adelaide’s key forwards and grind out a victory.
