AFL Round 17 Preview & Betting Tips
GWS vs Hawthorn
Saturday 4:35pm AEST, July 8th, GIANTS Stadium
The Saturday twilight fixture in Round 17 will see GWS welcome Hawthorn to GIANTS Stadium. The bookies expect this to be more competitive than the first game on the Saturday slate (Brisbane vs West Coast), although the Giants are still very short favourites at $1.15 to get the chocolates.
GWS had a horrid start to the season with only three wins from their first 10 matches but have since hit their straps to keep their season alive. They enter this weekend having won four of their last five games including a 47-45 road win against Melbourne last weekend, which was arguably their best result of the season to date.
Restricting opposition scores was a big struggle for the Giants early in the season, but they’ve been excellent at that over the past two weeks when conceding a combined 81 points against quality opposition in the Dockers and the Demons.
Hawthorn’s young list showed some signs of genuine growth from Round 10-13 where they won three out of four matches including two against top eight sides, although they’ve severely dropped off over the past two weeks. They’ve lost their last two outings by a combined 127 points and both were against sides outside the top eight.
It’s no coincidence the Hawks have suffered a huge drop off defensively in their past two matches with captain James Sicily on the sidelines with suspension. Sicily is clearly vital to his side’s defensive structure and will be missing his third and final game this weekend.
Away from home, coming off two huge losses, and still without their captain and best player, it’s tough to see how the Hawks will remain competitive over four quarters on Saturday. The Giants are in the best form they’ve been in all season and will be desperate to add another big win to their records.
With all of that said, I’m keen to back the Giants in to cover the spread here.
