Gold Coast vs West Coast

Sunday 1:00pm AEST, 28th April, People First Stadium

Gold Coast gets a golden opportunity to redeem themselves after another horror interstate trip that has become all too familiar for them across their 13 year history. The 53 point loss to the Swans reduced Damien Hardwick’s side to a 3-3 record, with all three losses this season coming outside of Queensland

Remarkably West Coast come into this clash on the back of consecutive victories, thanks to an upset victory in the Western Derby last week. The 37 point win wasn’t a true reflection of the Eagles dominance, who led by as much as 64 points in the third quarter.

The only sour point heading in this week is that West Coast have decided to rest Harley Reid, after producing performances of 27 disposals & 1 goal, and 19 disposals & 3 goals across the last fortnight.

West Coast will be without Tom Barrass (suspension) and Noah Long (hip), with the Eagles naming Liam Ryan, Andrew Gaff, Luke Edwards, Harvey Johnston, Harry Edwards and Jai Culley included in Sunday’s extended squad.

Liam Ryan is the big inclusion, with the 2018 premiership player having not played since Round 3 of 2023, after suffering two serious hamstring injuries. It’s important for punters to note that Ryan has played at half back in both of his WAFL games leading into this week, so keep Ryan out of your goal scoring options, but he’s certainly got some interest in the disposal markets.

Gold Coast have opted for experience at the selection table, bringing in Rory Atkins, Alex Sexton, Sam Day, Darcy Macpherson and Ned Moyle into the extended squad. Ethan Read (managed) and Bodhi Uwland (omitted) are the only confirmed omissions at the time of writing.

Gold Coast’s turnaround from a 53 point win in Round 5 to a 53 point loss in Round 6, came largely on their inability to run out the game against quality opposition. Sydney kicked 12 goals to Gold Coast’s 5 in the second half, a week after the Suns outscored Hawthorn by five goals in the second half.

Match Prediction: The Suns three wins have all come against bottom ten sides, at home, meaning this matchup looks like an easy kill for Damien Hardwidck’s side. Gold Coast are +23 in clearances across their three wins, so as long as the Suns gain some ascendancy at the coalface, they shouldn’t have too many troubles against West Coast. Elliot Yeo and Tim Kelly have been outstanding across the last fortnight, however the weight of numbers across Miller, Anderson and Rowell should win out.

Co-captain Jarrod Witts will be looking to bounce back after a rare poor outing, and will be looking to send a statement in a matchup that he has enjoyed in previous seasons. Witts recorded 48 hitouts against the Eagles last season, the equal second most hitouts Witts recorded in a game in 2023. If Witts and his midfielders win the battle in the centre, they’ll put a world of pressure on a West Coast defence that will eventually crack. Gold Coast are 3-0 at home this season with an average winning margin of 32 points, and have won four of their last five games against the Eagles. Expect another easy home kill for Gold Coast in this clash.

Noah Anderson 25+ Disposals: Noah Anderson continues to build year on year, averaging 28 disposals per game in 2024. Anderson had a quiet day against the Swans, but began the year with performances of 25, 35, 25, 33 and 36 disposals. Anderson has hit the 25+ disposal mark in his last two games against West Coast, and will be looking to bounce back after his performance last week.

Elliot Yeo 25+ Disposals: West Coast’s resurgence over the last fortnight has been built on the back of Elliot Yeo’s remarkable return to form. Although the wins have come over the last two weeks, Yeo is stacking up an outstanding start to the season after being riddled with injuries across the last four seasons. Yeo has hit the 25 disposal mark in five straight games and is averaging 26 disposals per game in 2024.

Matt Rowell 20+ Disposals: After a scintillating start to 2024 with four consecutive games over 25 disposals, Rowell has dropped off with performances of 22 and 20 disposals. Even when he has been quiet he still manages to find the footy, and with the former number pick unlikely to be tagged this week, expect a big game from Rowell.

Ben King 2+ Goals: King is putting together an impressive campaign, sitting seventh in the Coleman Medal race at the time of writing. King has kicked 16 goals from six games this season, and has kicked multiple goals in five of his six games in 2024.
