Geelong vs Fremantle Prediction & Betting Tips: AFL 2026 Round 1
Woeful Cats
Geelong produced arguably their worst performance in Chris Scott’s tenure in Opening Round, belted to the tune of 59 points against Gold Coast. The final margin flattered the Cats, who trailed by 85 points late in the third quarter. Geelong were obliterated in all the key areas, recording -32 uncontested possessions, -21 inside 50’s, -9 contested possessions and conceding a whopping 91 points from turnover. The Suns were red hot against a slightly undermanned Geelong side, but the Cats made life quite easy for Gold Coast.
Can They Live Up To The Hype?
For years Fremantle have promised so much but failed to deliver, and heading into season 2026, expectations are sky high for the Dockers. After finishing fifth, Fremantle bowed out in the first week of finals after losing to the Suns at home, and will be expecting to play deep into September this year. With Serong, Brayshaw, Young, Reid, rolling through the midfield and a forward line featuring Treacy, Amiss and Bolton, the Dockers have plenty of weapons across their list.
Recent Head to Head History
This has been an even matchup in recent seasons, with both the head to head matchup at 4-4 from their last eight games. GMHBA Stadium has been a fortress for Geelong over the last 20 years, however Fremantle have been a rare side to taste success at the Cattery, winning two of their last three games in Geelong. However when the two sides met at GMHBA Stadium in Round 1 of last season, the Cats dominated Fremantle, winning by 78 points.
Cats or Dockers? Here’s our Geelong vs Fremantle Tip
After a disappointing performance last week the Cats will be desperate to bounce back and send a statement. They regain two handy inclusions with Patrick Dangerfield and Jeremy Cameron returning from injury to face the Dockers. Geelong have an 81% winning record at their home venue with a record of 75-18, and having played last week should be a huge benefit. We’ve seen in recent seasons that teams who played in Opening Round fare better than sides who come into Round 1 as their first match, and the trip to GHMBA Stadium looms as a daunting one for Fremantle.
The Cats record at GMHBA Stadium last year was 8-2, with their eight wins coming at an average margin of 48 points per game, with seven of those eight wins coming by 16 or more points. Geelong will bounce back against a slow starting Fremantle, who have lost four of their last six opening games of the season.

Geelong vs Fremantle Same Game Multi
Max Holmes 30+ Disposals: As highlighted above, an average of 32 disposals per game across his last eight games at GHMBA Stadium, with 6 performances of 30+ in that run. He was one of a very few Geelong players who performed last week (29 disposals) and looks set for another big game.
Tanner Bruhn 20+ Disposals: In his first game back after missing the entirety of 2025, Tanner Bruhn produced a career best 31 disposals against the Suns. Bruhn looks set to have a more prominent role in 2026, and while he won’t pick up 30 each week, he should reach 20 comfortably.
Shaun Mannagh Any time Goal Scorer: One of the most reliable small forwards in the competition, Mannagh always finds a way to hit the scoreboard. Mannagh has kicked at least one goal in seven of his last eight games, and still managed to kick a goal last week despite having very little supply.
