BBL12 Renegades vs Scorchers Preview & Betting Tips

Marvel Stadium, Sunday 1st January, 1:40pm (AEDT)

Melbourne Renegades

Predicted XI: Nic Maddinson, Martin Guptill, Shaun Marsh, Aaron Finch, Jonathan Wells, Peter Handscomb, Akeal Hosein, Will Sutherland, Tom Rogers, Kane Richardson, Mujeeb Ur Rahman

With the departure of Andre Russell and the arrival of Martin Guptil came a big shake up in the Renegades batting line up. Guptill replaced Sam Harper at the top of the order, Shaun Marsh came in for Jake Fraser-McGurk after recovering from injury, while Peter Handscomb came into the middle order and took over wicket keeping duties. Although it didn’t come to fruition on Wednesday against the Sixers, it’s a much more balanced and experienced batting unit that should hold the Renegades in good stead.

After starting the season 3-0, the Renegades have lost back to back games due to two shocking performances with the bat. After restricting the Sixers to 8/149, the Renegades were bowled out for 115 in an innings where they faced 63 dot balls. After playing a positive brand of cricket with the bat through the first three games of the season, that has completely left the Renegades, who have been skittled for 115 and 114 in their last two games.

Despite the two poor showings with the bat, the Renegades bowling attack has been excellent across all five games this season. Akeal Hosein (10 wickets at 12.1 with an economy of 6.36) and Tom Rogers (8 wickets at an average of 19) are both inside the top ten wicket takers in BBL12. With Mujeeb and Kane Richardson also in the side, it’s a high quality attack when they’re up and going.

Perth Scorchers

Predicted XI: Adam Lyth, Faf du Plessis, Nick Hobson, Josh Inglis, Ashton Turner, Aaron Hardie, Cameron Bancroft, Jhye Richardson, Andrew Tye, Jason Behrendorff, Peter Hatzoglou

It was another convincing victory for the Scorchers on Thursday night, with a six wicket win over the Stars sealed with fifteen balls to spare. Skipper Ashton Turner once again was the main man with the bat, smashing 53 off 26 deliveries to make light work of the chase for the Scorchers. Ashton Agar has been called up to the Australian squad for the Sydney Test, meaning there will be at least one change to the Scorchers eleven. Given the depth in their bowling stocks, it seems likely the Scorchers would opt with a batsmen to replace Agar at seven.

The platform for the comfortable chase was set by the Scorchers bowling attack, who have been in red hot form to start the season. Jhye Richardson (12 wickets at an average of 9.66, with an economy of 5.80), Andrew Tye (10 wickets at an average of 16.40), and Jason Behrendorff (9 wickets at 16.11, with an economy of 7.25), all rank inside the top seven wicket takers in BBL12.

In what has been an even season so far, the reigning champions have established themselves as the best team in the competition, with a 4-1 start to the season. Their bowling attack consistently gets the job done, while they have the batting firepower to put up massive scores when needed.

Match Prediction

Two high class bowling attacks face off on a Marvel Stadium surface that provided plenty of pace for the quicks in the one game that has been played there this season. Given the quality of bowling on display, this clash is going to be decided by which batting unit can gain the upper hand. Given what the Renegades have produced in their last two games, it’s hard to see them taking down Richardson, Behrendorff and Tye.

This has been one of the most one sided matchups across the history of the BBL, with the Scorchers holding a 13-3 head to head advantage over the Renegades. The Scorchers have won five of the last six games between the two sides, and are 6-1 against the Renegades at Marvel Stadium. This will be an entertaining clash to kick off the new year, but the Scorchers bowling attack will be too strong.

Josh Inglis is in red hot form in BBL12, scoring 187 runs at an average of 46.75 with a strike rate of 161.20, at the time of writing Inglis is the second leading run scorer in the competition. In his last three knocks against the Renegades Inglis has scored 97 runs at an average of 48.5, and has hit the 15+ run mark in his last four games.

For the second leg we’re going back to AJ Tye who once again delivered in his last game with two wickets. Our BBL Data Tools show that Tye has taken multiple wickets in six of his last seven games, and we’ll be backing him in to produce against an out of form Renegades batting unit.

To round out the multi, we’ve got Akeal Hosein to take a wicket. The Trinidadian has taken ten wickets in BBL12, and has taken at least one wicket in four of his five games. Hosein has opened the bowling in every game this season, which has generated plenty of wicket taking opportunities, with batsmen looking to go hard in the powerplay.

Josh Inglis 15+ Runs

Andrew Tye 2+ Wickets

Akeal Hosein 1+ Wicket
