The Sixers face some tough and unique challenges in this year’s final. The Sixers haven’t played for a week and Saturday night will be the first time that they’ve played at the SCG this season. The Scorchers will have a massive advantage from playing on Thursday night and will be well primed to take on Sixers. The Scorchers big task will be removing James Vince and Josh Philippe early on in the game. In the Scorchers win over the Sixers in early January, Philippe was dismissed for 5 and Vince was dismissed for 0.
The Scorchers have had success against the Sixers. Leading the head to head battle 11-8, including a victory over the Sixers in the BBL04 final. The Scorchers were in red hot form to end the home and away season, winning eight of their last nine games, before a blip in the radar with the loss in The Challenger. The Scorchers batsmen got back into the groove on Thursday, scoring 1/189 off just 18 overs thanks to Liam Livingtsone and Mitchell Marsh. With the power and depth in the Scorchers side, they’re aren’t many teams that possess the flexibility the Renegades have.
With the Scorchers the lower seed, there is plenty of pressure on the Sixers to win at home. However, the Scorchers power with the bat and balance with the ball is going to be the deciding factor. If the Sixers lose Vince and Philippe early, it could be massive danger signs for the Sixers. The Scorchers have been excellent performers in finals cricket across the history of the Big Bash, and that experience will be crucial come Saturday. With the touch the Scorchers are in after their big win on Thursday and the power in their batting unit, the Scorchers are set to take down the Sixers and secure their fourth Big Bash League title.
In his breakout season in BBL09, Josh Philippe capped his season off in style smashing 52 off just 29 balls in a player of the final performance to guide the Sixers to a comfortable win over the Stars. Philippe has had an excellent BBL10 campaign, scoring 499 runs (2nd most in the competition) at a strike rate of 150. The 23 year old was rewarded with Australian selection and player of the tournament honours thanks to his incredible season.
Philippe has had his way against the Scorchers since coming into the Sixers side. Philippe has scored 45, 84, 5, 9 and 81 not out in his past five innings against the. Philippe took the game away from the Scorchers early in The Qualifier, and will be looking to produce another big performance on the big stage. Philippe had an outstanding record at the SCG and will be well positioned to produce another player of the final performance.
The Scorchers biggest strength this season has been their batting. With Roy, Livingstone, Munro and Inglis in the top four, Mitch Marsh has been pushed down to five, yet has still churned out the runs. Marsh has smashed 304 runs at an average of 43, whilst striking at 149. Marsh has risen to the occasion in the BBL finals he has played so far, with scores of 77 off 57 (BBL01) and 37 off 12 (BBL02). Marsh’s big game experience will be crucial, and his ability to bat anywhere in the order is so crucial during big finals.
Marsh has scored 105 runs at an average of 52 across his last three games, with scores of 49 not out, 54 not out and 2. Marsh was man of the match when the two sides met in early January, after scoring 57 not out off just 27 balls as the Scorchers smashed the Sixers by 86 runs. Marsh is hitting form at the right time of the season and is a big game player. Expect another big performance from the big hitting all-rounder, to get his side across the line.
