Amidst of all the Ashes hype, Australia and India begin an ODI series on Sunday in Perth. Two of the best sides in the world going head to head, with plenty of star power on show, this should be an entertaining series. We bring you our full betting preview for the match below!

Australia vs India 1st ODI Preview & Betting Tips
Optus Stadium, Sunday 19th October, 2:30pm AEDT
Australia
Squad: Mitchell Marsh, Xavier Bartlett, Cooper Connolly, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Matthew Kuhnemann, Mitchell Owen, Josh Philippe, Matthew Renshaw, Matthew Short, Mitchell Starc
Australia’s side will be missing two key players on Sunday, with Josh Inglis out with a calf injury, while Adam Zampa misses through family reasons. Inglis’ absence opens the door for Josh Philippe to play his first ODI since 2021. With Zampa out, it puts Matt Kuhnemann in line to play his first ODI since 2022.
Matt Renshaw has been rewarded with squad selection and a chance at making his ODI debut after consistent performances at domestic level, while Mitch Owen’s meteoric rise continues and is also in the frame to make his ODI debut. Australia will likely invest in some new players, with an ODI World Cup only two years away.
The World Champions come into this series ranked third in ODI cricket, but have had a poor twelve months in ODI cricket. Since the 8th of November 2024, Australia have had 7 losses, 2 wins and 1 no-result in One Day Internationals, and they lost their last series 2-1 to South Africa in August.
India
Squad: Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel, KL Rahul, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Dhruv Jurel, Yashasvi Jaiswal
Shubman Gill leads India in ODI cricket for the first time, as the number one ranked side in the world brings an experienced squad down under. After retiring from Test and T20I cricket, there will be plenty of eyes on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, in what could be their final tour of Australia.
This will be India’s first ODI fixture since winning the Champions Trophy in February. India have had a great year in the ODI arena, winning eight out of eight games in 2025. Shubman Gill has led the way for India, scoring 447 runs at an average 63.85 in 8 games this year.
Like Australia, India do have some injury issues leaving some star players out of the series. Rishab Pant is out with a fractured foot, Jasprit Bumrah will only feature in the T20I series to manage his workload, and Hardik Pandya has a quad injury. Ravindra Jadeja was a surprise omission from the squad, given he’s been India’s leading wicket taker in ODI cricket in 2025.
Match Prediction
Both sides come into this game in opposing veins of form, with Australia having lost seven of their last ten ODI’s, while India come into Sunday’s match on the back of eight consecutive wins. There’s a lot more experience in India’s side with Australia obviously prioritising preparation for the Ashes, which gives India an advantage in this series.
These two sides have essentially alternated win/loss against each other across the last five years in ODI cricket, with India winning 8 games and Australia winning 7. Australia has a poor record in ODI cricket at Optus Stadium, losing all three of their ODI games at the venue, including an 8 wicket smashing against Pakistan in their last game at the venue. India are in much better form and will get off to a winning start in Perth.

Shubman Gill has had a hell of a year across all formats, and the new Indian captain will be looking to send a statement early in this series. Gill’s last eight innings in One Day Internationals have produced 87, 60, 112, 101*, 46, 28, 8 and 31, to be India’s highest run scorer in 2025.
