AFL Round 11 Preview & Betting Tips
Richmond vs Port Adelaide
Sunday 1:10pm AEST, May 28th, MCG
Life without Damian Hardwick at the helm for Richmond begins on Sunday when they take on Port Adelaide at the MCG. Andrew McQualter takes over in the caretaker role and has plenty of work to do to steady the ship.
McQualter doesn’t have any experience as head coach at the top level and was a journeyman in his AFL career when playing 94 games, so it’ll be interesting to see what he brings to the table for the Tigers in his first hit-out in charge.
Last weekend’s heartbreaking loss against the Bombers in the Dreamtime match was the last straw for Hardwick who decided to leave his post in the following days. It was a match they never should’ve lost but a few sliding doors moments late in the fourth quarter cost them the four points.
The Tigers now find themselves with only three wins to their name after 10 matches and can’t afford too many more slipups if they have any aspirations of playing finals footy in 2023.
Meanwhile, Port Adelaide look almost a sure thing to play finals footy after their hot start to the season. They’re 8-2 coming into Round 11 and are currently riding a league-high seven-game win streak.
Power coach Ken Hinkley was almost out of a job after their Round 3 loss to Adelaide in the Showdown, but the board stuck fat and have been duly rewarded thus far.
Last weekend’s win over the Demons was arguably their best performance of the season, although there have been a few other contenders, such has been their consistently great play this campaign.
Zak Butters had one of the better individual performances you’ll see in their recent win and has quickly assumed superstar status on the back of his recent form.
Also performing well for the Power in the middle of the park are Connor Rozee and Jason Horne-Francis. And along with Butters, the trio form arguably the best young midfield in the competition.
You would think the Power would be the red-hot favourites to add to their win streak this weekend when they take on the out-of-form Tigers, although we see time and time again teams perform exceptionally well in their first game with a new coach in charge.
The new coach factor makes the head-to-head and handicap markets too dicey to predict, so I’ll be avoiding them as a result.
Instead, I love the idea of taking the unders in the total points market. Four of their last five meetings have gone under the current total of 167.5 points, and when you couple that with the fact both teams rank in the top eight for points conceded this season, it makes for a fairly obvious bet in my opinion.
