Game 2 of the Championship series was a wild one! The Kings were without both Xavier Cooks and Derrick Walton Jr. for the most part, but still found a way to get the job done on the road and level this best-of-five series at one win apiece.
The 81-74 win for the Kings was on the back on some stifling defence in the first three quarters where they were able to limit the Breakers to just 41 points. The clamps were well and truly on Game 1 hero Will McDowell-White (7 points, 2-8 FG), and that meant a lot of the heavy lifting had to be done by the pair of Barry Brown Jr. and Jarrell Brantley who combined by 41 points.
The Kings two All-NBL First Team players in Cooks and Walton Jr. played just seven minutes between them and combined for two points, which meant the other guys had to step up in a big way. Kouat Noi did just that with 20 points in 32 minutes of action, while DJ Vasiljevic (16 points) hit a number of big shots.
Despite what the box score suggests in terms of scoring, the most important player on the floor on Sunday night was undoubtedly Justin Simon. The former Defensive Player of the Year finished the night with six steals, falling just one shy of the record for a Championship Series game. Simon has been the Kings standout player in the first two games and will need to be big again on Friday night.
The stage has been set beautifully for an electric Game 3 in Sydney where both teams will be desperate to win and move within just one game of becoming NBL23 champions.
The last two meetings at Qudos Bank Arena have gone the way of the Breakers, but there hasn’t been much in either of them and as such, I’m expecting another very tight affair.
In my opinion, this one is impossible to pick and is an absolute 50-50. I guess that tells us that the Breakers are the value play at around the $2.30 mark. However, I believe there’s even better value taking ‘Any Other Result’ in the ‘Wire to Wire’ market. This should be a back and forth contest and I simply cannot see either team leading from post to post.
