It’s that time of year again! The F1 season has rolled around and as usual, the Australian Grand Prix is set to kick off the year with a massive party from Albert Park!
We have a full preview and betting tips for the 2020 Australian Grand Prix below!
Valtteri Bottas claimed the Australian Grand Prix title last year and will back to defend his title in the Mercedes once again this season. His teammate, Lewis Hamilton, enters the season as both the favourite for the Australian Grand Prix and for the drivers’ championship, after claiming the end of season title by almost 100 points.
Unlike last season, there hasn’t been a great deal of key driver changes leading into this year. The only driver to change teams from the big three of Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari was the departure of Frenchman Pierre Gasly from Red Bull to AlphaTauri-Honda.
The Albert Park F1 Track has hosted the Australian Grand Prix every year since the 1996 season, when it relocated from Adelaide to Melbourne. It is just over 5.3km in length and runs around the famous Albert Lake, through the park grounds themselves.
The circuit is pretty wide open all the way around, but at the same time, has been a difficult track to overtake on in the past. German Michael Schumacher still holds the fastest lap time of 1.24.125, set back in 2004 when he won one of his four titles in Melbourne.
For all of his dominance on Friday and Saturday in Australia, Lewis Hamilton has one of the smallest conversion rates at Albert Park in his career. He has claimed pole position on eight occasions for just two wins in Australia, which is staggering considering Albert Park has actually proven to be quite a tough track to overtake on.
Despite that fact, it’s incredibly hard to look past Hamilton here. The Englishman starts as a $2.10 favourite, which could be one of the higher prices you will get for Hamilton in any GP throughout the year if he carries his form from last season over.
Of the current drivers, only Sebastian Vettel (3) has more wins in Australia than Hamilton’s two, but there are still some concerns over the Ferrari vehicle this season, so we are opting to go for Hamilton here.
