Tonga vs Samoa Preview & Betting Tips: 2026 Rugby League World Cup

October 29th 2026, 2:56pm, By: Scooby

Rugby League World Cup Tonga vs Samoa Tips

The 2026 Rugby League World Cup group stage concludes with one of the most eagerly anticipated fixtures of the tournament, as Pacific rivals Tonga and Samoa go head-to-head at CommBank Stadium in Sydney on Sunday night.

Few international rugby league encounters generate quite the same atmosphere as this fierce Pacific rivalry. With passionate supporters, enormous national pride and some of the NRL's biggest stars representing their heritage, Tonga versus Samoa has become one of the sport's great modern spectacles. The intensity begins long before kick-off, with the traditional pre-match challenges setting the tone for what promises to be a bruising encounter.

This year's showdown carries even greater significance, with both nations harbouring genuine ambitions of making a deep run at the World Cup. The result will have major implications for the semi-final draw, and neither side will want to enter the knockout stages on the back of a defeat to their fiercest rival.

Beyond the emotion and physicality, this is a fascinating contest between two exceptionally talented squads. Both possess powerful forward packs, explosive attacking weapons and the ability to turn a game in a matter of minutes. With so much at stake, discipline, composure and execution under pressure could ultimately prove the difference.

Tonga enter as narrow favourites, but there's very little separating these teams on paper. With a place in the semi-finals and Pacific bragging rights on the line, Sunday's clash has all the ingredients of a World Cup classic.

We take a closer look at Tonga vs Samoa, including recent form, key statistics, betting odds, our best bet and a three-leg same-game multi for this blockbuster Rugby League World Cup Round 3 encounter.

Flexing their muscles

Following a commanding 30-12 victory over England in the opening week of competition, Tonga returned to Sydney to face Lebanon.

After a tough start where their opponents looked ready to compete, Tonga quickly kicked into another gear which went unmatched; they eventually won the contest 36-0.

They have improvement left in them also. With 52% possession they completed at just 68%, made 10.6m per carry, 787 PCM’s, and 9 line breaks. Strong defensively, they missed just 20 tackles, conceded 1 line break, and allowed just 7.2m per carry. That performance was made more impressive by the fact that several key players were absent for that match while interchange players were given a longer period on the field; the margin of victory could’ve easily been more.

Continuing their dominance

The Samoans have made a statement in their opening two matches of the competition, with their attacking flair dominating their play.

Following their 78-4 thrashing of France, they travelled north to PNG to face the Kumuls last week. In challenging conditions, the visitors set a standard that their opponents failed to meet. Leading by just 14-6 at HT, they kicked into another gear in the second half, producing 10 tries in that period. Their dominance was highlighted by their 69% share of possession and 79% completion rate. This allowed them to make 10.8m per carry, 718 PCM’s, and 12 line breaks. They were also strong defensively, missing just 23 tackles, allowing 2 line breaks, and conceding just 231 PCM’s.

They have been a class above in their opening two matches and performed accordingly.

Stats that matter

- These two sides have met 23 times in their history. It is incredibly close with Samoa winning 12 games, Tonga 10, and 1 draw.

- Samoa recorded a dominant 34-6 over Tonga in their 2025 Pacific Championship match, their largest victory over Tonga in 30+ years.

- There is little between these two sides in international rankings, with Tonga ranked 5th and Samoa 4th overall.

Going down to the wire

There is an outside chance that Samoa could miss the Finals altogether should they lose this game, but they will know what is required of them prior to kick-off based on the outcome (and the margin) of the England match.

There are a host of changes for Tonga that are aimed at increasing the strength of their team, with the coaching staff taking the opportunity last week to manage the fatigue levels of key players. That will work to some extent, and they probably need it for their middle forwards most. The inclusion of Katoa at halfback offers an advantage.

Against this, Samoa are taking the consistent approach and building on previously established combinations within their team; they’re unchanged heading into this contest and their confidence will grow because of it. It is surprising to see them listed as outsiders; the value on them is high but perhaps not the best option in a head-to-head contest.

With a loss likely to force a Semi Final matchup with Australia, Samoa could have all the motivation they need to cause an upset; it will hardly be an upset though should that occur. An epic contest is ahead and that ensures a close game that is likely only to be decided in the dying stages of this match.

Total points over 45.5 – the 6-again rules will likely impact the attacking flow of this game and with two talented attacking teams facing off, neither will need an invitation to exploit chances offered to them via the new rules.

Fa’alogo to score – he is the tournaments leading try scorer with 6 tries from 2 games and will again be in the middle of the action as his speed and agility causes havoc for his opponents.

Olakau’atu to score – he was devastating in the opening game of the competition for his country, crossing the line twice. Expect another bold showing from the hard running back rower as he aims to lead his team to victory.

Scooby's strength is assessing the overall team - what they offer across the field in a match and how the ethos of a club contributes to their success. Momentum also has a major impact on sports, and Scooby likes to explore this, while underpinning his judgement against a solid basis of statistical analysis. When combined with the aforementioned points, it combines for a holistic approach towards betting on rugby league.

Other sports he enjoys include Cricket, Horse Racing and NFL. There is a reason why Scooby ‘clicked’ with BYB from Day 1 - he loves his sport as much as we do.
