Kings vs Phoenix Prediction & Tips: NBL27 Round 8

November 6th 2026, 2:44pm, By: Heath Chick

NBL Kings vs Phoenix Tips

Sydney Kings return home on Sunday afternoon looking to consolidate top spot on the NBL27 ladder when they host South East Melbourne Phoenix in one of the standout fixtures of NBL Round 8.

Sydney have won four consecutive games, including impressive road victories over Perth and Tasmania last weekend. The Phoenix, meanwhile, are looking to recover from a disappointing home defeat to an injury-depleted JackJumpers side.

The matchup presents an interesting contrast in styles. Sydney have demonstrated they can win through both offensive firepower and disciplined defence, while South East Melbourne favour an aggressive, high-tempo approach built around transition scoring and three-point shooting.

Sydney Kings vs South East Melbourne Phoenix Prediction & Betting Tips: NBL27 Round 8

Sunday 8 November 2026 | 3:00pm AEDT | Qudos Bank Arena, Sydney

Kings Back on Top

Sydney have established themselves as genuine championship contenders, sitting on top of the NBL27 ladder with a 7-3 record following an impressive Round 7 road double.

The Kings first defeated Perth 99-91 at RAC Arena, with Kendric Davis producing 24 points and nine assists. Less than 48 hours later, they travelled to Launceston and secured a hard-fought 71-68 victory over Tasmania, with Davis again leading the way with 20 points and nine assists. The result was particularly impressive given the demanding travel schedule and the quality of the opposition.

While Sydney's offence has been one of the competition's most productive, their victory over Tasmania demonstrated another dimension to their game. The Kings restricted the JackJumpers to just 68 points, showing they can adjust to a physical, defensive contest when their usual attacking rhythm is disrupted.

Davis remains the focal point of the offence, averaging 21.6 points and 8.2 assists per game. His ability to create his own shot and generate opportunities for teammates makes him one of the league's most influential players, although his three-point shooting has been inconsistent at 21.7% this season.

The Kings also possess considerable scoring depth. Torrey Craig is averaging 18.0 points and 6.9 rebounds while shooting 37% from beyond the arc, and Makuach Maluach has been extremely efficient, averaging 13.9 points per game. Xavier Cooks provides a major advantage inside with his rebounding, athleticism and ability to finish around the basket.

One player to monitor is Matthew Dellavedova, who has been sidelined through injury. Sydney are hopeful he can return against the Phoenix, although his availability remains subject to medical clearance. His defensive intensity and experience would be particularly valuable against South East Melbourne's dangerous backcourt.

With four consecutive victories and the benefit of returning home after their demanding road trip, Sydney appear well positioned to continue their winning streak.

Phoenix Frustrations

South East Melbourne have endured a frustrating start to NBL27, sitting eighth on the ladder with a 4-6 record despite possessing considerable attacking talent.

The Phoenix appeared to be building momentum with consecutive convincing victories before suffering a disappointing 98-89 home defeat to Tasmania last Sunday. Against a JackJumpers side missing several regular rotation players, South East Melbourne fell 22 points behind before mounting a late comeback that ultimately proved insufficient.

D'Shawn Schwartz was the standout performer with 27 points, but the defeat exposed the Phoenix's ongoing difficulties maintaining defensive intensity across four quarters. Coach Josh King was critical of his team's inconsistent effort, particularly after they allowed an undermanned opponent to establish such a substantial lead.

Nathan Sobey remains the team's most experienced attacking weapon, averaging 17.0 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists. His aggressive approach creates opportunities both attacking the basket and shooting from distance, although his 38.6% field-goal shooting indicates there is room for improvement in his efficiency.

Former Kings guard Angus Glover has been another important contributor, averaging 14.4 points per game, while Skylar Mays provides additional playmaking and scoring ability. Young prospect Dash Daniels has also impressed, averaging 12.6 points and shooting an encouraging 38.1% from three-point range.

The Phoenix's depth extends to Jordan Hunter, who provides size and rebounding inside, while Schwartz and Tanner Krebs are capable of stretching opposing defences with their perimeter shooting.

Their greatest strength is the ability to generate scoring opportunities through pace and volume. South East Melbourne are comfortable taking early shots and attempting large numbers of three-pointers, making them dangerous when their perimeter shooters find their rhythm.

However, that approach also creates problems defensively. Their aggressive style can leave them vulnerable in transition, while inconsistent defensive execution has contributed to several disappointing results.

South East Melbourne have won just one of their four away games this season, making Sunday's assignment particularly challenging against the ladder leaders.

Key Matchups

Kendric Davis vs Nathan Sobey

The battle between the two experienced guards could have a major influence on the result.

Davis is the more consistent playmaker, with his 8.2 assists per game highlighting his ability to control Sydney's offence. Sobey is a more aggressive, high-volume scorer who can change a contest quickly when his outside shooting is working.

Interestingly, Davis has scored at least 25 points in each of his past four appearances against South East Melbourne, while Sobey has averaged 25 points across his previous five meetings with Sydney. That history suggests both players are capable of producing significant scoring performances, although their current season averages are considerably lower.

Xavier Cooks vs D'Shawn Schwartz

Cooks provides Sydney with an important physical advantage inside, particularly through his rebounding and ability to attack the basket.

Schwartz, meanwhile, is most dangerous operating around the perimeter, where his shooting can create space for South East Melbourne's guards.

If Cooks can dominate the rebounding battle while also limiting Schwartz's outside opportunities, the Kings will have an important advantage. However, Schwartz's ability to stretch the floor could also draw Sydney's defenders away from the basket.

Sydney Kings vs Phoenix Betting Analysis

Sydney's superior defensive consistency and home-court advantage make them deserved favourites, but South East Melbourne's attacking style introduces some uncertainty into the handicap market.

The Kings are averaging 97.9 points per game while conceding just 88.1, giving them one of the strongest scoring differentials in the competition. The Phoenix are averaging 96.9 points, but their defence has been less convincing, allowing 94.3 per game.

That difference is significant. Sydney have demonstrated they can control games defensively, while South East Melbourne frequently need strong offensive performances to compensate for their defensive shortcomings.

The head-to-head history also favours Sydney, who have won 17 of the 23 meetings between these teams, including eight of 11 at their home venue.

However, recent meetings have generally been high-scoring. The last five encounters have all produced at least 195 points, with the teams' contrasting styles creating plenty of offensive opportunities.

That makes the total points market interesting, although we would be cautious about relying too heavily on those historical results. Sydney's 71-68 victory over Tasmania last weekend demonstrated their ability to slow the game down considerably, and a similar defensive approach could undermine an overs selection.

The more compelling option is Sydney against the handicap. The Kings have the better defence, superior recent form and a significant advantage playing at home. South East Melbourne's 1-3 away record and recent defeat to Tasmania add to the case for the favourites.

Sydney Kings vs Phoenix Best Betting Tips

Market Best Bet Odds
Best Bet Sydney Kings -6.5 $1.90 (1.5 units)
Total Points Over 192.5 $1.92 (0.5 units)
Player Points Kendric Davis 25+ Points $2.10 (0.5 units)

Best Bet: Sydney Kings -6.5

Sydney have been the more reliable team throughout the opening seven rounds and enter Sunday's matchup in considerably better form.

The Kings have the personnel to exploit South East Melbourne's defensive weaknesses, particularly through Davis's playmaking and the interior presence of Cooks. Their depth also gives them several options if the Phoenix concentrate their defensive attention on Davis.

South East Melbourne have enough offensive talent to remain competitive, especially if Sobey and Glover find their range from beyond the arc. However, their inconsistency away from home makes them difficult to trust against the ladder leaders.

The potential return of Dellavedova would strengthen Sydney's defence further, although his availability remains unconfirmed as he recovers from a calf injury. Keli Leaupepe remains out for the season, while Hunter Goodrick is sidelined for the Phoenix.

At a handicap of 6.5 points, Sydney look capable of winning comfortably enough to cover, although the Phoenix's offensive firepower means this is not a risk-free selection.

Alternative Bet: Over 192.5 Total Points

The total points market also deserves consideration, with both teams ranking among the league's highest-scoring sides.

South East Melbourne's fast-paced approach should create additional possessions, while Sydney have the offensive quality to capitalise on the Phoenix's defensive vulnerabilities.

All five of the most recent head-to-head meetings have exceeded 192.5 points, although Sydney's improved defence means the historical trend should be treated cautiously. The overs is worth considering as a smaller secondary selection rather than the main bet.

Player Prop: Kendric Davis 25+ Points

Davis has an outstanding recent scoring record against South East Melbourne, reaching 25 points in four consecutive meetings.

The Phoenix's aggressive defensive approach could provide opportunities for Davis to attack mismatches, particularly if Sydney can create transition opportunities or force defensive rotations.

However, his current season average of 21.6 points and relatively poor three-point percentage make this a speculative selection rather than a high-confidence bet.
