South East Melbourne Phoenix host the Tasmania JackJumpers at John Cain Arena on Sunday afternoon in a fascinating NBL27 Round 7 clash between two teams heading into the contest with contrasting momentum.
The Phoenix have found their offensive rhythm in recent weeks, winning consecutive games against Cairns and Adelaide while scoring more than 100 points in both victories. Tasmania, meanwhile, must regroup quickly after suffering a heartbreaking 71-68 defeat to the Sydney Kings in Launceston on Friday night.
That defeat was particularly costly for the JackJumpers, who lost key contributor David Johnson to a calf injury during the first half. With Tasmania now facing a short turnaround and an interstate trip, the Phoenix have an excellent opportunity to continue their climb up the NBL ladder.

The Offensive Power of the Phoenix
The Phoenix have recovered strongly from an inconsistent start to the NBL27 season, producing two impressive home victories that have demonstrated the attacking potential of Josh King's side.
South East Melbourne dismantled the Cairns Taipans 115-83 on October 17 before backing up with a 108-94 victory over the Adelaide 36ers last Saturday. Those performances have helped restore confidence following a difficult stretch in which the Phoenix lost three of four games.
The victory over Adelaide was particularly impressive. South East Melbourne produced a remarkable first quarter, connecting on 10 three-pointers and racing to a 42-25 advantage. The 36ers struggled to contain the Phoenix offence, which maintained control despite another big scoring performance from Bryce Cotton.
Nathan Sobey remains one of the team's most important offensive weapons, while Skylar Mays provides another capable scoring and playmaking option in the backcourt. Angus Glover and Dash Daniels have also contributed significantly, giving the Phoenix several players capable of influencing games at both ends of the floor.
The biggest question for South East Melbourne is whether they can maintain their offensive efficiency against Tasmania's disciplined defence. The JackJumpers are generally far more effective at disrupting opposition rhythm than either Cairns or Adelaide, and the Phoenix shouldn't expect the same freedom they enjoyed in their previous two games.
Nevertheless, South East Melbourne have the advantage of playing at home with a full week between games. Against a Tasmania side coming off a demanding Friday night contest, that could prove significant.
JackJumpers Desperate to Respond
Tasmania will be desperate to respond after letting a golden opportunity slip against the Sydney Kings on Friday night.
The JackJumpers appeared to have done enough to secure an important victory when they opened a 66-59 lead inside the final three minutes at the Silverdome. However, Sydney produced a remarkable late comeback, scoring 12 of the game's final 14 points to snatch a 71-68 victory.
The defeat dropped Tasmania to a 6-3 record and second place on the ladder, but the biggest concern was their offensive execution. The JackJumpers shot just 32 per cent from the field, connected on nine of their 30 three-point attempts and made only 17 of 29 free throws.
Dakota Mathias was the standout performer with 20 points, including four three-pointers, while Taran Armstrong contributed 13 points, six rebounds and three assists. Josh Bannan finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds, and captain Will Magnay worked tirelessly inside with nine points and 14 rebounds.
Despite their shooting struggles, Tasmania's defence and rebounding kept them in control for much of the second half. The JackJumpers collected 14 offensive rebounds and made life extremely difficult for Sydney's talented offensive lineup.
However, the loss of David Johnson is a significant setback. Johnson suffered a calf injury during the second quarter and did not return, with coach Scott Roth suggesting afterwards that the injury could keep him sidelined for an extended period. Ben Gold was also struggling with a foot concern.
Johnson has been an important scoring option for Tasmania this season, and his likely absence places additional responsibility on Armstrong, Mathias and the rest of the JackJumpers' backcourt. With Ben Ayre, Majok Deng and Bryce Hamilton also unavailable recently, Tasmania's depth is being tested.
There is also the issue of recovery. The JackJumpers must travel from Launceston to Melbourne and play again less than 48 hours after a physical and emotionally draining contest against Sydney.
Phoenix vs JackJumpers Head-to-Head
These teams have already met once during the NBL27 season, with Tasmania recording a narrow 96-91 victory in Hobart on September 21.
That result demonstrated how closely matched the teams can be, although the circumstances are considerably different this time around. South East Melbourne have since found a more consistent offensive rhythm, while Tasmania are dealing with a growing injury list and a demanding turnaround.
The Phoenix have also enjoyed some memorable victories over the JackJumpers in recent seasons, including a 120-104 win at home in February.
Sunday's matchup presents an interesting contrast between South East Melbourne's attacking firepower and Tasmania's defensive structure. If the Phoenix can generate the same quality of perimeter opportunities they enjoyed against Adelaide, they will be difficult to stop. Tasmania, however, have the rebounding strength and defensive discipline to keep the contest competitive.
Phoenix vs JackJumpers Betting Tips
South East Melbourne enter Sunday's contest as favourites, with the Phoenix priced at $1.74 and Tasmania available at $2.05 in the head-to-head market with a 2.5 line.
Ordinarily, Tasmania at better than even money would be an attractive proposition given their impressive start to the season and the quality of their defensive performances. However, Friday night's defeat to Sydney has changed the equation.
The JackJumpers not only lost a close contest they appeared likely to win, but also suffered another important injury setback. Johnson's absence reduces their offensive flexibility, particularly against a Phoenix side capable of scoring quickly and building substantial leads.
South East Melbourne have scored 223 points across their last two games and will be looking to push the tempo whenever possible. Tasmania would prefer a more controlled contest, relying on their defence and rebounding to limit possessions and prevent the Phoenix from finding their rhythm.
The concern with backing the Phoenix is their inconsistency. They have looked outstanding in their recent victories, but their defensive performances haven't always matched their attacking output. Tasmania are certainly capable of bouncing back, particularly if Armstrong and Mathias can find more consistent scoring support.
Nevertheless, the combination of recent form, home-court advantage, additional recovery time and Tasmania's injury concerns makes South East Melbourne the preferred selection.
The Phoenix have been excellent offensively in their last two games and should benefit from a full week of preparation. Tasmania are backing up from a physically demanding defeat to Sydney and have suffered another significant injury with David Johnson expected to miss time. The JackJumpers remain dangerous, but South East Melbourne look well placed to take advantage at home.
