Betr has launched Wildcards, a new Same Game Multi feature designed to give punters more control over their existing AFL SGMs while a match is underway.
The new product launched in time for the inaugural AFL Wildcard Round and is now available across all AFL games, with Betr describing Wildcards as a first-to-market innovation in the Australian betting market.
Unlike a temporary promotion created specifically for AFL Wildcard Weekend, Wildcards is a new piece of betting technology developed by Betr and added permanently to its mobile app.
Betr has also indicated that the technology behind Wildcards can eventually extend beyond AFL Same Game Multis into racing and other betting products.
What Are Betr Wildcards?
Wildcards are a new feature that can be used with eligible Betr Same Game Multis.
Betr describes the feature with the tagline: "Take CHARGE of your bet – LIVE."
The idea is to give customers another way to interact with their SGM after the match has started, rather than simply placing the multi before the game and waiting for the result.
Wildcards launched in version 6.5.1 of the Betr app and are currently available on all AFL matches. The feature is also exclusive to the Betr app, meaning customers need the latest version of the mobile app to access Wildcards.
How Do Betr Wildcards Work?
Wildcards work in conjunction with an eligible Same Game Multi that has already been placed.
Betr CEO Andrew Menz has explained that the feature allows customers to make decisions around individual legs of their SGM as the game unfolds. Exactly which Wildcard options are available can depend on the bet and the Wildcard presented within the app.
Betr has not yet published a comprehensive public Wildcards rules page detailing every possible Wildcard and scenario, so customers should check the information displayed in the Betr app before using one. It appears that users will have the ability to change or pivot your SGM picks while in-play to potentially salvage a leg that is going badly. We will update this guide as Betr publishes more information about the different types of Wildcards and exactly how they affect an SGM.
Are Betr Wildcards Live Betting?
It is important to distinguish Wildcards from conventional in-play sports betting.
Australian regulations restrict online in-play sports betting, and Betr CEO Andrew Menz specifically acknowledged those restrictions when discussing the development of Wildcards.
Wildcards are instead built around an existing Same Game Multi and provide additional functionality once that bet is underway.
Betr has described the product as a "live Same Game Multi product", but that should not be confused with simply placing a new live sports bet through the app.
Which Sports Have Betr Wildcards?
At launch, Betr Wildcards are available across all AFL games. That means their introduction during the AFL Wildcard Round was more than a play on the name.
The product will remain available as the competition moves into the 2026 AFL Finals Series.
Betr has also made it clear that the underlying Wildcards technology has broader potential.
Management says the technology can be extended beyond Same Game Multis and into racing and other betting products, making the AFL version the first application of what could eventually become a much broader Betr feature.
Where Can You Find Betr Wildcards?
Wildcards are currently exclusive to the Betr mobile app, which is already among one of our best Australian sports betting apps.
Both Betr's Apple App Store and Google Play listings now feature Wildcards prominently, confirming that they are available across all AFL games. Customers will therefore need an updated version of the Betr app.
Wildcards join a growing range of proprietary features Betr has introduced across its sportsbook, including Same Game Multis, Same Race Multis, StatWars and Live Tracker.
Wildcards Started at a Betr Hack Day
One of the more interesting parts of the Wildcards story is how the product came about.
According to Betr CEO Andrew Menz, the original Wildcards idea was developed during an internal Betr hack day.
Staff from across the company were brought together for two days and challenged to develop ideas for new customer experiences. Wildcards was the winning entry.
Betr subsequently decided to develop the idea into a full consumer product, with Menz describing Wildcards as the company's "hero product" launch for 2026.
The product has been developed using Betr's in-house technology rather than simply adding an off-the-shelf sportsbook feature.
Why Has Betr Launched Wildcards?
Betr sees product differentiation as an increasingly important part of competing in the Australian wagering market.
The bookmaker has spent the past year upgrading the betting experience across both sport and racing, including improvements to Same Game Multis, Live Tracker, player statistics, Sky Racing integration and its proprietary StatWars product. Wildcards takes that strategy another step.
Instead of competing solely through prices and promotions, Betr is attempting to develop betting features that aren't readily available with competing bookmakers.
Menz told investors that Wildcards is designed to increase engagement with the Betr app while an event is taking place. There is also a social element to the concept. Betr believes customers may discuss which leg they should use a Wildcard on while watching a game with friends, potentially making the SGM experience more interactive.
Same Game Multis Are Becoming More Important to Betr
The launch comes as Same Game Multis become an increasingly important part of Betr's sportsbook business.
During its FY26 results presentation, Betr reported that Same Game Multi turnover was up 30% during the opening weeks of FY27 compared with the corresponding period a year earlier.
Overall turnover was also running more than 20% higher, while the number of new customers had almost doubled. Those figures help explain why Betr is investing in additional SGM technology. If more customers are building Same Game Multis, features that improve the SGM experience could help Betr differentiate its app from Sportsbet, TAB, Ladbrokes, Dabble and other Australian bookmakers offering their own SGM builders.
Betr Same Game Multis
Betr's standard Same Game Multi product allows customers to combine multiple selections from the same sporting event.
For example, an AFL SGM might include:
- a team to win;
- a player to record a certain number of disposals;
- a player to kick multiple goals; and
- a total match points selection.
Betr currently allows up to 12 legs in an individual Same Game Multi.
SGMs are available across selected competitions including AFL, NRL, NBA, NFL, BBL and EPL. Betr also offers Same Game Multi Extra, which allows eligible SGMs from different events to be combined into a larger multi, with up to 25 total legs.
Wildcards now add another layer to that existing SGM product.
Other Betr Betting Features
Wildcards joins several other products Betr has introduced or expanded as it attempts to differentiate its betting app.
Live Tracker
Betr's Live Tracker allows customers to follow the progress of their Same Game Multis from the app's home screen.
That makes it a natural companion to Wildcards, with customers able to follow how individual selections are performing as the match progresses.
StatWars
StatWars is another Betr-exclusive product.
Instead of backing a player simply to record over or under a statistical total, StatWars creates head-to-head matchups between prominent players across different statistical categories.
For AFL, these can include most kicks, handballs, marks, tackles and score involvements.
StatWars is currently available across AFL, NBA and NFL.
Same Race Multi
Betr also offers Same Race Multis across Australian thoroughbred and greyhound racing.
Customers can combine multiple runners and finishing positions from the same race, with up to four selections in an individual Same Race Multi.
That existing racing multi technology is particularly interesting given Betr's comments about eventually extending the Wildcards concept into racing.
Could Betr Launch Racing Wildcards?
Potentially.
Betr management has specifically indicated that the underlying Wildcards technology can be expanded into racing and other multi-bet products. Exactly what a racing Wildcard would look like has not yet been publicly detailed. The mechanics would presumably need to differ from an AFL Same Game Multi because racing bets operate very differently from player and match markets.
Betr has been investing heavily in racing products, including integrating Sky Racing 1 and Sky Racing 2 and race replays directly into its app. That makes racing an obvious area to watch as Betr continues developing Wildcards.
Is Betr Wildcards a Promotion?
No. Wildcards should be viewed primarily as a Betr app and betting product feature, rather than a temporary bookmaker promotion.
The timing of the launch alongside the inaugural AFL Wildcard Round provided Betr with an obvious marketing opportunity, but the feature isn't restricted to those two matches.
Betr confirms Wildcards are now available across all AFL games.
That means the feature will continue through the AFL Finals rather than disappearing after Wildcard Weekend.
Is Betr the First Bookmaker to Offer Wildcards?
Betr describes Wildcards as a first-to-market live Same Game Multi product.
Other Australian bookmakers already offer extensive Same Game Multi builders, bet trackers and other tools for following an SGM.
However, Betr is positioning the ability to use Wildcards on an existing SGM while the event unfolds as its point of difference.
It will be interesting to see whether rival bookmakers develop similar SGM functionality if the concept proves popular.
Betr Wildcards Verdict
Wildcards is one of the more interesting new Australian sportsbook features to launch in 2026.
Same Game Multis themselves are well established, but competition between bookmakers is increasingly moving beyond simply offering more SGM markets.
Sportsbooks are now competing on how quickly customers can build their multis, the statistics available while building them and how easily they can follow their selections after placing a bet. Betr is attempting to push that further by adding another layer of interaction once an SGM is underway.
The first AFL rollout will be the real-world test. More interesting in the longer term is Betr's decision to build Wildcards as proprietary technology capable of being extended into other products.
If Betr can successfully take the concept beyond AFL and into racing and other sports, Wildcards could become a significant point of difference for the Betr app rather than simply an AFL Finals feature.
