Friday Night Football at 4 Pines Park shapes as a genuine ‘win or go home’ game for Manly, although at this stage it may already be too late to save their season. The Sea Eagles have lost five consecutive matches, fallen from third to 10th on the ladder and now return from a trip to Perth where they blew a 14-0 lead before being hammered 42-20 by Melbourne. Despite finally getting back to Brookvale, Manly arguably have the worse travel setup against a Dolphins side coming off a Brisbane derby and now officially assured of playing finals football.
The market is basically where I have this game rated, so this is not a major edge. However, the alternative margin appeals more than forcing the traditional spread. The Dolphins have secured their first finals berth and can now attack the final month without the same pressure that has followed them in previous late season collapses. If the shackles come off, this backline can put a number on a Manly side whose defensive confidence looks completely shot.
Tom Trbojevic remains unavailable with his hamstring injury, leaving Clayton Faulalo at fullback. The Dolphins are close to full strength through their spine and backline, with Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, Isaiya Katoa, Herbie Farnworth, Jack Bostock, Selwyn Cobbo and Jamayne Isaako all named.

Sea Eagles’ Season Falling Apart
Manly’s 42-20 loss to Melbourne in Perth might have been the performance that finally broke their finals campaign. The opening stages were actually excellent. The Sea Eagles raced to a 14-0 advantage and looked capable of snapping their losing run, only for the Storm to score 42 unanswered points as Manly completely lost control of the contest. Taniela Paseka also suffered a suspected MCL injury, adding another setback to a side already without Turbo.
That second half collapse is the greater concern than the raw result. Manly’s attack still has weapons. Jason Saab, Tolu Koula, Reuben Garrick, Lehi Hopoate and Haumole Olakau’atu can all generate points, while Jamal Fogarty provides a reliable kicking game. The issue is what happens when momentum shifts against them. Over the past month, Manly have been beaten by Parramatta, Gold Coast and North Queensland before the Melbourne loss, surrendering leads, and falling apart defensively with alarming regularity.
Kieran Foran has been forced into further changes this week. Faulalo returns at fullback, but Manly are still without Trbojevic and have lost Paseka from the middle. Simione Laiafi starts at prop alongside Nathan Brown, with Corey Waddell and Olakau’atu remaining their greatest attacking weapons in the pack.
Brookvale should produce a response. It is essentially win or go home, and Manly will know they embarrassed the Dolphins 52-18 earlier this season. But the team playing now looks a long way removed from the side that produced that result in April.
Dolphins Finally Break Through to September
The Dolphins secured their finals position in dramatic fashion with a 40-32 victory over Brisbane after trailing 24-0 inside the opening 20 minutes. Rather than folding, they dragged the margin back to 30-24 by halftime before dominating possession and field position through the second half. It was the sort of comeback that demonstrated a maturity this club has often lacked during late season campaigns.
Most importantly, the Dolphins now know they will play finals football. After fading badly down the stretch in previous seasons, that psychological hurdle has finally been cleared. Isaiya Katoa has spoken about wanting more than simply making September, and the side remains close enough to the top four for the final month to carry genuine meaning.
Their attacking lineup is frightening when healthy. Hammer gives them explosive support play through the middle, Isaako remains an elite finisher, while Bostock, Farnworth and Cobbo give the Dolphins arguably the most physically imposing three quarter line in the competition. Katoa’s return has restored organisation to the spine and allows Kodi Nikorima to attack more instinctively.
The forwards are also in far better shape than Manly’s. Thomas Flegler and Francis Molo start, Jeremy Marshall-King controls the ruck, while the Dolphins have Morgan Knowles, Connelly Lemuelu and Kulikefu Finefeuiaki in the starting pack.
Now comes an interesting psychological test. Having finally qualified, do the Dolphins relax in a bad way, or does the pressure release allow them to play their most dangerous football? I lean strongly toward the latter.
Sea Eagles vs Dolphins Recent History
There have only been four previous meetings between these clubs since the Dolphins entered the NRL. Manly have won three of the four and absolutely demolished the Dolphins three times, putting 50 on them on each occasion, including the 52-18 victory at Kayo Stadium earlier this season and a 58-30 win at Brookvale last year. The Dolphins’ lone victory was a 30-24 result at Suncorp Stadium in 2024.

The history is the biggest warning against the bet, but the current versions of these teams look radically different to those involved in Manly’s earlier blowouts.
Dolphins to Put Manly Out of Their Misery
The standard spread does not interest me because it is basically sitting on my fair number. If we were only betting based on ratings, this would be a pass.
The Dolphins 13+ angle, and even bigger margin victories, is more about how I expect the game to develop if the visitors win.
Manly are desperate enough to make the opening half extremely competitive. Brookvale will be loud, Foran should get a response from his side and Olakau’atu can cause serious problems on the edge. The Dolphins also need to deal with the fact Manly embarrassed them 52-18 earlier this season, so there should be no danger of taking the opponent lightly.
But once this reaches the final 30 minutes, I trust the Dolphins significantly more.
Manly have repeatedly fallen apart late in matches during their five game slide. Their confidence looks fragile, their forward rotation has been weakened and their best player remains unavailable. If the Dolphins establish any sort of scoreboard pressure, the Sea Eagles could very quickly begin chasing the game.
That is exactly the environment Hammer, Farnworth, Bostock, Isaako and Cobbo want. The Dolphins can score from anywhere, and with Katoa controlling the kicking game they no longer need to rely solely on broken field brilliance.
The travel angle also matters. Manly technically return home, but they are the team coming across the country after last weekend’s Perth fixture. The Dolphins have remained in the eastern side of Australia and should be physically fresher.
This is a small wager because the market has the basic matchup right and Brookvale remains dangerous. But the direction of the two seasons could not be more different. The Dolphins have finally punched their finals ticket and can start thinking about how high they can finish. Manly are desperately trying to stop an extraordinary collapse.
If the Dolphins get on top, I think the score can get away from the Sea Eagles quickly.

Lemuelu scored a double last week, but this week Finefeuiaki takes on the edge where the Sea Eagles have leaked tries all season. With Waddell struggling last week against the Storm, I expect the Dolphins to hammer that edge all night.
