NRL action begins on Friday night with a reduced round of action ahead of the blockbuster State of Origin decider on Wednesday. The missing talent on the field is unlikely to cause a disruption to the quality of performances, with both teams in this game desperate to build on their current performances. Panthers vs Rabbitohs Predictions & Tips: NRL Round 18 2026
An upset loss just a minor setback
Few expected the Panthers to lose on their trip north to Townville to play the Cowboys, but they were comprehensively outplayed in the 26-12 defeat. Locked at 10-all at HT following a tense exchange, the Panthers offered little in the second half to worry their opponents. It was an uncharacteristic display as they completed at just 64% with 45% possession, made 300 fewer metres, and had just 3 line breaks. Of more concern is their defence, which allowed 5 line breaks and 9.5m per carry. They will be better moving forward but the challenge of improving this week is compounded with the loss of players to representative selection.
Finding form (again)
The Rabbitohs returned to their best last week with a 32-12 road victory over the Eels. Aided by their opponent’s poor standard of execution, the Rabbitohs took their chances when it mattered, having a greater share of possession (52%) and a higher completion rate (76%) to aid their effort. This allowed them to average 9.4m per carry, have 592 PCM’s, and 6 line breaks. Their defence was also strong, missing just 24 tackles. Having versatile players in their team who play a variety of positions will be pleasing. Challenges remain though; a better, more consistent team would’ve made their pay for their mistakes last week and they must be better in this area if they wish to remain in the Top 8.
Stats that matter
- Home ground advantage is always important and while it’s not the Panthers traditional home ground, they still have a superior record, winning 59% of matches here compared to the Rabbitohs 48%.
- When the Panthers win, they usually do so against the Rabbitohs 13+ while their opponents win by a 1-12 margin. That is how it has panned out in the past 5 matches between them. The average margin of victory sits at 16.8 points, with the average total points being 44.8.
- It is no surprise that the Panthers are the superior team on both sides of the ball. They average 31ppg in attack compared to the Rabbitohs 29ppg and concede just 13ppg while the Rabbitohs leak 22ppg defensively.
Timing is everything
Do not underestimate the emotional power that possesses the Rabbitohs. With the recent news surrounding one of their players – and a month-long celebration – this is a big occasion for them. The Panthers are understrength without their Origin stars, while a few other key players are also absent. It’s tough to justify the starting price on offer when you consider these factors. The return of Wighton for the Rabbitohs offers stability, with Duncan able to shift to the backrow. The Panthers are a gritty team; an opportunity is presented to those players who would normally miss out on this game, and it is a good one considering the direction the club is heading. This game will be tight throughout with the eventual winner only prevailing late. For all that has been mentioned, it appears as though the visitors are the better value, but rather than take the price on offer, play it safe with the line.

Panthers vs Rabbitohs Same Game Multi
Leg 1 = Total points under 45.5 – see above for justification.
Leg 2 = Cogger to score – he rarely gets such opportunities but seems to excel against the Rabbitohs, with 3 tries from his past 2 matches against them. Great odds are on offer considering, yet moving to halfback should only increase his chances.
Leg 3 = Smith to score – like Cogger, Smith rarely crosses the line in game but appears to have a liking to this opponent. He has 2 tries from his past 3 matches against them and is slowly returning to peak form after an injury.
