Zach Merrett was once again the standout, collecting 32 disposals and driving much of Essendon’s ball movement, while the rest of the side struggled to match the intensity of their opposition. The Bombers were particularly exposed in transition, allowing high numbers of uncontested possessions and rebound 50s. If they are to challenge Port, they will need to tighten up defensively and find a way to compete more consistently at stoppages, an area where they were soundly beaten last week.

Their midfield still has the talent to control the contest if they can lift their intensity, and playing at Adelaide Oval has historically been a major advantage, particularly against Essendon. The Power have won their last five against the Bombers at this venue, with most of those victories coming by comfortable margins.
Essendon’s defensive struggles and inability to handle pressure last week are a major concern heading into this clash.
