Port Adelaide vs Essendon Prediction & Betting Tips: AFL 2026 Round 2

Carr Era Faces Early Test

Port Adelaide’s 2026 campaign got off to a disappointing start with a 46-point loss to North Melbourne, where they were outworked through the midfield and struggled to maintain pressure around the contest. Zak Butters and Connor Rozee found some ball, but the lack of support exposed deeper issues, particularly around stoppages and defensive transition.

The more concerning trend remains their inefficiency inside 50. Port finished with 9.13 in the loss and continue to struggle to convert opportunities, a problem that has carried over from previous seasons. However, there were positives in attack, with Mitch Georgiades kicking three goals and looking like the most reliable focal point. Returning to Adelaide Oval, where Port have won their last five against Essendon, should provide a much-needed boost, especially if their midfield can apply pressure and generate repeat entries.

Bombers Under Pressure

Essendon endured a tough Opening Round, going down heavily to Hawthorn in a match that quickly got away from them after a competitive opening. The Bombers were overrun through the midfield and struggled to contain Hawthorn’s ball movement, conceding 145 points in a performance that highlighted defensive vulnerabilities.

Zach Merrett was once again the standout, collecting 32 disposals and driving much of Essendon’s ball movement, while the rest of the side struggled to match the intensity of their opposition. The Bombers were particularly exposed in transition, allowing high numbers of uncontested possessions and rebound 50s. If they are to challenge Port, they will need to tighten up defensively and find a way to compete more consistently at stoppages, an area where they were soundly beaten last week.

Power or Bombers? Here’s our Richmond vs Gold Coast Tip

Both sides enter this matchup under pressure, but Port Adelaide appear better placed to respond. Their midfield still has the talent to control the contest if they can lift their intensity, and playing at Adelaide Oval has historically been a major advantage, particularly against Essendon. The Power have won their last five against the Bombers at this venue, with most of those victories coming by comfortable margins.

Essendon’s defensive struggles and inability to handle pressure last week are a major concern heading into this clash. If Port can replicate the type of forward-half pressure Hawthorn applied, they should generate enough opportunities to take control of the game. While both teams are capable of inconsistency, the Power’s home-ground edge and greater depth should see them bounce back strongly.

Port Adelaide vs Essendon Prop Bet

Mitch Georgiades shapes as a major threat inside 50 and comes into this matchup in strong form, having kicked seven goals across his last two games. Essendon’s defence looked vulnerable last week, conceding 145 points to Hawthorn and struggling to contain key forwards. With Port likely to generate plenty of forward entries at home, Georgiades should again see consistent opportunities. If delivery improves even slightly, 4+ goals is well within reach for the Power’s main target.

Port Adelaide vs Essendon Same Game Multi

Corey Durdin 2+ Goals | Zak Butters 25+ Disposals | Zach Merrett 25+ Disposals

This multi leans into role and opportunity across both sides. Corey Durdin hit the scoreboard with two goals in Port’s opener and should again benefit from increased forward entries against a vulnerable Essendon defence. Zak Butters remains a key ball-winner for the Power and, despite a quieter 23 disposals last week, had produced three straight games of 25+ prior to that, suggesting a bounce-back is likely. On the Essendon side, Zach Merrett continues to rack up possessions regardless of game script, collecting 32 disposals in a heavy loss last week and maintaining his status as the Bombers’ primary midfield accumulator. In a game that should feature plenty of ball movement and scoring chances, this combination of Durdin 2+, Butters 25+ and Merrett 25+ stacks up strongly.
