Race 8: Schweppes Carrington Stakes 1400m (LISTED) - 4:45pm (AEDT)
(2) Nellie Leylax: 5YO gelding who resumes here off a 20-week break but has been set up nicely with two trials, the latest a sharp 1200m win where he comfortably accounted for BESTOWER. Boasts an excellent fresh record (3: 2-0-1) and is proven at this track, with two wins over the 1400m trip. While he was competitive up to 2400m last campaign — which may indicate bigger targets later in the prep — his record at this distance and fresh profile suggest he can make an immediate impact. A major tick is his affinity for rain-affected going, with all his wins coming on soft or heavy ground. The booking of James McDonald is a strong endorsement, and from the pole he maps to control proceedings and give them something to run down. A genuine winning chance at odds.
(3) Matcha Latte: Resuming 6YO gelding coming off a very successful last campaign, recording two impressive wins at this distance as well as a victory at this track. Draws a handy barrier and keeps Ashley Morgan in the saddle. Shapes well fresh and is set to run a competitive first-up race over his preferred trip. Likely to settle just behind the leaders and, if the pace is solid, should be charging home late. Profiles as a strong each-way contender.
(6) Cool Jakey: Produced a solid return when resuming over 1100m, rattling home with the best last 600m of the race. The rise to 1400m second-up was always going to suit and he proved that by scoring in good style. Forgive his most recent run where he was disappointing, as he has shown previously he’s capable of rebounding quickly. Any rain would be a major plus, as he’s far more effective with some give in the track. Worth another chance here and shapes as a genuine each-way play.
Also Backing: (3) Matcha Latte WIN $7.00 (1 Unit)
(2) Nellie Leylax E/W
$13/$3.60 (0.5U/1U)
Race 9: Spelling At Coolmore Mt White BM78 1200m - 5:20pm (AEDT)
(2) Winning Proposal: 4YO Mare who looks a nice roughie of the race. Was honest enough first up at big odds and is likely to improve second up. $20 into $13 in the early market is positive. Blow out hope.
(8) Useapin: 4YO Mare who hasn’t been up to her best this prep, but her best is definitely good enough for this. Drop in distance will suit and strips fitter third up. Importantly gets the booking of J-Mac back into the saddle. Each way.
(11) Beside The Ocean: This 3YO filly is shaping as a very talented type and has shown plenty of promise this preparation. First up run she looked beaten around the 400m mark after being caught behind runners, but Jason Collett delivered a perfect ride, finding clear running and letting her charge home to pick them up including STORMLAND, who has since won again, franking the form. Last start over 1100m she encountered a tricky spot in running but still finished strongly, narrowly missing out, with no disadvantage from being on speed adding further credit to her performance. She now steps out to 1200m, which should suit perfectly given her strong finishing bursts in both previous runs this prep. Third-up, rock-hard fit, and reunited with Collett, she rates very highly and profiles as a filly with plenty of upside moving forward.
(11) Beside The Ocean WIN
$4.50 (1.5 Units)
Race 10: Tab BM78 1400m - 5:55pm (AEDT)
(2) Althoff: 4YO gelding who has been enormous in all three runs this preparation and has arguably been his own worst enemy by settling too far back, often leaving himself with plenty to do. Despite that, his late sectionals have been outstanding. First-up he absolutely savaged the line, weaving through traffic and only just missing. Second-up he again settled rearward, peeled out late and charged home to finish right on the heels of the leaders. Last start he stepped out to 1350m, which proved ideal by giving him the extra time to wind up, and he duly saluted with an impressive win. He remains in the same grade and stretches to 1400m now, and with Siena Grima back aboard claiming 3kg, he gets in a kilo lighter than last start. While the switch from Hyeronimus back to the apprentice is noted, Grima rode him well in his first two runs this prep and there’s no reason she can’t get the job done this time. He maps to settle back once more and will need a touch of luck finding clear air, but the step to 1400m suits perfectly and gives him ample time to unleash his powerful turn of foot. A very progressive type who looks to be going places and rates as a major player.
(9) Miss Hades: Value play of the field who notched up 2 handy wins and then tired late most recently. Nearly a month between runs now and the drop to 1400m looks to suit. Nicely weighted with a 2kg claim and can give a shout at each way odds.
(2) Althoff WIN
$3.50 (2 Units)
