NFL 2026-27 Week 1: 49ers at Rams Preview & Betting Tips

September 9th 2026, 7:33pm, By: Ben Bridge

NFL Betting Tips

The NFL season arrives with something completely different for Australian fans, as the Los Angeles Rams sacrifice a home game to host NFC West rivals the San Francisco 49ers at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in the first regular season NFL game ever played in Australia.

Kick-off comes at 10:35am Friday morning in Melbourne, and while the novelty of seeing two genuine Super Bowl contenders at the MCG will dominate much of the build-up locally, the location itself has also created one of the most fascinating betting angles of Week 1. These teams have taken dramatically different approaches to dealing with a trans-Pacific flight and one of the largest time zone changes NFL players will ever experience.

San Francisco arrived in Melbourne a full week before kick-off, building their preparation around acclimatisation, sleep, and the unusual morning start time. Los Angeles have taken the opposite approach, electing to maintain their normal routine in California before arriving around 24 hours before the game. The NFL itself has acknowledged the significant travel demands involved in playing in Australia, and history suggests the earlier approach could matter: 17 of the 26 teams to arrive at least a day earlier than their opponent for comparable long haul international games have covered the spread.

That becomes particularly interesting when the Rams are laying 3.5 points against a divisional rival that knows them intimately. Sean McVay and Kyle Shanahan remain two of the NFL’s premier offensive minds, and their familiarity has helped create one of the league’s better modern rivalries. Los Angeles have certainly had the better of it recently, winning four of the past five regular season meetings, but asking them to win by more than a field goal under these circumstances looks considerably tougher.

The best bet takes the points with San Francisco, while the unusual Week 1 environment also has me leaning towards a lower scoring game. The prop card centres around a growing role for Rams tight end Colby Parkinson and the likelihood that Christian McCaffrey becomes Brock Purdy’s pressure release against Myles Garrett.

NFL 2026-27 Week 1: San Francisco 49ers at Los Angeles Rams Betting Tips

Rams - Last Season Recap

The Rams entered 2025 as a contender and ultimately came within one victory of returning to the Super Bowl, finishing the regular season 12-5 before making a run all the way to the NFC Championship Game.

Matthew Stafford produced the finest season of his career, throwing for 4,707 yards and 46 touchdowns on his way to being named NFL MVP. Puka Nacua further established himself among the league’s elite receivers, while Sean McVay again constructed an offense capable of attacking opponents in virtually every way.

Los Angeles defeated Carolina 34-31 in the Wild Card round before surviving Chicago 20-17 in overtime in the Divisional Round. Their season eventually ended with a 31-27 loss to Seattle in the NFC Championship Game, leaving the Rams agonisingly close to another Super Bowl appearance.

They also continued their recent success against San Francisco. The teams split their two meetings in 2025, with the 49ers winning 26-23 in overtime in Week 5 before Los Angeles responded emphatically with a 42-26 victory at Levi’s Stadium in Week 10. That left the Rams with four wins from the past five regular season meetings between these teams.

Rather than stand still during the offseason, Los Angeles went aggressively after another championship.

The headline move was acquiring reigning Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett from Cleveland. Garrett set an NFL record with 23 sacks last season, and the Rams paid heavily to get him, sending Jared Verse and significant future draft capital to the Browns. They also strengthened the secondary with Trent McDuffie before stunning the league late in the preseason when franchise legend Aaron Donald announced his return from retirement.

Donald, however, will not play in Melbourne, with the Rams electing to leave him in Los Angeles as he continues building back towards game condition. Garrett is expected to debut despite dealing with knee swelling during preparation.

The Rams may have become more talented defensively, but Week 1 represents an unusual test. They are effectively treating a 14+ hour flight and massive time zone adjustment as a short road trip.

Whether that strategy works could decide this game.

49ers - Last Season Recap

San Francisco also finished 12-5 last season, an enormous improvement from their disappointing 6-11 campaign in 2024. The road there was far from straightforward.

Brock Purdy missed considerable time with turf toe, forcing Mac Jones into an extended starting role, while injuries again tested the depth of Kyle Shanahan’s roster. Despite that, the 49ers fought their way back into the postseason and ultimately finished third in what became an extremely strong NFC West.

Christian McCaffrey was once again the centrepiece. After injuries ruined his 2024 campaign, McCaffrey returned to play all 17 games and compiled 1,202 rushing yards, 924 receiving yards and 17 total touchdowns. His 102 receptions were another reminder that describing him simply as a running back undersells what he provides Shanahan’s offense.

San Francisco went into Philadelphia and defeated the Eagles 23-19 in the Wild Card round before their season ended brutally in Seattle, where the Seahawks handed them a 41-6 Divisional Round defeat.

The receiver room has undergone another significant makeover entering 2026. Mike Evans arrives as the headline addition and immediately gives Purdy one of the great redzone receivers of the modern era, while Deebo Samuel has returned to San Francisco after one season in Washington. Samuel joins Evans and several other new faces in a receiving corps that will be without Ricky Pearsall following knee surgery.

There are injury questions elsewhere. Nick Bosa is returning from another ACL reconstruction and George Kittle is coming back from the Achilles injury suffered in last season’s playoffs, although both are trending towards playing in Melbourne.

Importantly for this matchup, San Francisco have taken the Australian trip extremely seriously.

The 49ers arrived a full week early, have adjusted their training schedule around the 10:35am local kick-off, and implemented specific sleep and nutrition plans to help players manage the enormous time difference.

That preparation may prove every bit as important as any offseason roster addition.

Matchup Breakdown & Best Bet

This is my strongest bet of the game.

On a neutral field under normal circumstances, I understand why the Rams would be rated as the slightly stronger team entering the season. Stafford is coming off an MVP campaign, McVay has one of the NFL’s deepest rosters, and adding Myles Garrett to this defence is frankly ridiculous.

But this isn't a normal neutral field game. It's being played almost 13,000 kilometres from California, at 10:35 in the morning local time, after the two teams have taken completely opposing approaches to one of the most extreme travel situations the league has attempted.

Three factors make San Francisco +3.5 stand out.

1) The travel advantage is significant

San Francisco arrived a full week before the game and have spent that time actively shifting their body clocks towards Melbourne time.

Los Angeles are deliberately attempting the opposite. The Rams believe arriving late will allow them to remain closer to their normal physiological schedule and minimise jet lag. Perhaps they're right, but history favours teams that give themselves additional time to acclimatise.

With 17 of 26 teams that arrived at least a day earlier in comparable long distance international spots covering the spread, San Francisco's preparation cannot simply be dismissed as background noise.

For me, it is part of the handicap.

2) Divisional familiarity makes 3.5 valuable

The Rams have unquestionably had the wood over San Francisco recently, winning four of the past five regular season meetings. However, the longer term McVay/Shanahan rivalry has the 49ers coach on top. That actually makes taking +3.5 more appealing rather than less.

These coaching staffs know each other extraordinarily well. McVay and Shanahan have spent years trying to counter one another's tendencies, and San Francisco have rarely entered these games without a detailed understanding of what Los Angeles want to do.

Even last season's first meeting required overtime before the 49ers escaped with a three-point victory.

In a game I expect to remain competitive, getting more than a field goal matters.

3) The Rams' terrifying defensive front comes with Week 1 caveats

Myles Garrett against this San Francisco offensive line is the matchup that scares me most.

Garrett broke the NFL single season sack record with 23 last year, and Purdy cannot afford to hold the football waiting for deeper concepts to develop.

But Aaron Donald isn't playing, Garrett has dealt with knee swelling during preparation, and this will be the first meaningful game for a Rams defence featuring several new pieces.

San Francisco also possess one of football's best answers to pressure: Christian McCaffrey underneath.

I don't necessarily need the 49ers to win this game. I simply need them to stay within a field goal, and given the preparation advantage and divisional familiarity, +3.5 is too much.

49ers +3.5

$1.95 (1.5 Units)

Total Points Market

Week 1 can be difficult enough for NFL offenses without adding international travel, significant body clock disruption, and an unfamiliar stadium.

The current total around 48–48.5 asks these teams to produce a relatively clean offensive game immediately.

Historically, international NFL games have averaged around 43.5 total points, while the average Week 1 game across the past five seasons sits around 44.5.

Neither statistic guarantees anything here, particularly with Stafford, Purdy, McCaffrey and Nacua involved, but both provide context for why I prefer the under at a number approaching 50.

There are also some obvious reasons for early offensive disruption.

San Francisco may use short passes and McCaffrey touches to protect Purdy from Garrett rather than consistently testing Los Angeles vertically. The Rams, meanwhile, have the bigger unknown surrounding their late arrival and how players respond physically once the game begins.

The MCG itself adds another unfamiliar element, with an enormous oval playing surface retrofitted for American football.

I don't love the under enough to make it an official play, because both offensive coaches are capable of manufacturing points regardless of circumstances. But at 48.5, the lean is clearly towards the lower side.

Verdict: Under 48.5 is the lean.

Key Players & Prop Markets

Colby Parkinson - Over 19.5 Receiving Yards (Best Prop)

This number looks too low for Parkinson's current role. The Rams increasingly turned towards Parkinson late last season, and his production followed.

From Week 12 through the NFC Championship Game, Parkinson cleared 19.5 receiving yards in nine of ten games. His late season numbers included performances of 41, 27, 32, 75, 21, 53 and 36 yards before he recorded 34, 56 and 62 yards across Los Angeles' three playoff games.

He also demonstrated the matchup upside against San Francisco.

Parkinson caught four passes for 41 yards and a touchdown when the Rams defeated the 49ers in Week 10 last season.

For this bet, we don't need anything resembling that production. Two catches may be enough.

At 6-foot-7, Parkinson provides Stafford with a huge underneath target, and with San Francisco vulnerable to tight end production last season, I expect McVay to give him opportunities against linebackers and safeties rather than forcing everything through Puka Nacua and Davante Adams.

Parkinson finished 2025 with 43 catches for 408 yards and eight touchdowns, and his role was clearly trending upwards as the season progressed. At 19.5, the bar is simply too low.

Colby Parkinson over 19.5 receiving yards

$1.90 (1 Unit)

Christian McCaffrey - Over 40.5 Receiving Yards

This is partly a McCaffrey bet and partly a Myles Garrett bet. San Francisco know exactly what awaits Purdy off the edge.

Garrett recorded a ridiculous 23 sacks last season despite facing a league-high 139 chip blocks, and allowing long passing concepts to continually develop against him would be asking for trouble. The obvious counter is getting the ball out quickly.

McCaffrey caught 102 passes for 924 yards last season, averaging more than 54 receiving yards per game. His ability to turn checkdowns into meaningful gains gives Purdy an outlet whenever the Rams' rush wins early.

I also expect San Francisco's offense to start relatively conservatively in Week 1. The 49ers don't need to challenge Garrett repeatedly when McCaffrey can be isolated against linebackers underneath, particularly if Los Angeles play aggressively up front.

At 40.5, five or six receptions could be enough.

Christian McCaffrey over 40.5 receiving yards

Anytime Touchdown Markets

Colby Parkinson anytime TD - $5.25 (Lean)

If Parkinson's receiving yard number is too low, his touchdown price also deserves attention.

He scored eight regular season touchdowns last year despite beginning the season with a relatively modest receiving role, then added another touchdown during the playoffs. His frame makes him a natural end zone target for Stafford.

At $5.25, there's enough value to have a look without making it an official play.

Mike Evans anytime TD - $3.05 (Official Bet)

There aren't many better ways for Mike Evans to announce himself as a 49er.

Evans immediately gives Shanahan and Purdy something San Francisco have lacked consistently: a dominant, proven contested catch and redzone receiver.

The matchup also suits the bet. If the Rams' pass rush forces San Francisco to become more direct around the goal line, Evans doesn't need volume. He needs one isolated matchup.

San Francisco currently list Evans as a starting receiver entering Week 1, and I expect Shanahan to manufacture at least one opportunity for his new weapon near the end zone.

At $3.05, that's enough for an official play.

Final Thoughts

There probably isn't another Week 1 game where preparation deserves this much weight in the handicap.

The Rams may ultimately prove that their late arrival strategy is the smarter way to handle Australia. Sean McVay and his staff have deliberately chosen to keep the players on something closer to their normal schedule, and nobody should confuse that decision with poor planning.

But we're still talking about asking NFL players to travel across the Pacific, adjust to a completely different environment and play football at 10:35am in the morning roughly a day after arriving.

San Francisco have removed much more of that uncertainty. They've spent a week in Melbourne, altered their training times, worked specifically on sleep and nutrition, and effectively treated Australia as a temporary home rather than a short business trip. In a matchup already separated by little on paper, that matters.

Los Angeles deserve favouritism. They reached the NFC Championship Game last season, Stafford remains one of the league's best quarterbacks, and adding Myles Garrett has potentially transformed an already dangerous defence. But 3.5 points is different from simply asking who wins.

The Rams have dominated this rivalry recently, but Shanahan knows McVay as well as any coach in football, San Francisco have enough offensive weapons to counter the Rams' pressure, and the additional half-point beyond a field goal is significant in a game I expect to remain tight.

Take the travel edge and take the points.

Prediction: Rams 24, 49ers 23

(49ers cover, total stays under)
