The 2026/27 NBL season moves into Round 3 this week, with a packed nine-game schedule running from Wednesday through to Sunday.

Round 3 also marks the beginning of the NBL27 Ignite Cup, with Wednesday night's New Zealand Breakers v Cairns Taipans and Sydney Kings v Brisbane Bullets games opening the midweek action before another busy weekend of NBL basketball.

Cairns head to New Zealand with plenty to fix after getting shredded on defence to start the season. Leaking 111 points to Sydney before failing to slow down Adelaide on Sunday showed just how vulnerable Adam Forde’s side is right now, especially without much interior presence to protect the paint. Staying competitive across four quarters will be tough unless their defensive discipline improves dramatically.

The Breakers have their own issues and clearly need a secondary ball-handler to take some heat off Parker Jackson-Cartwright, but they still look far more settled than the Taipans. PJC is dictating tempo at will, Sam Mennenga should have a field day inside against this undersized frontcourt, and New Zealand simply have more reliable scoring options. Giving up just 3.5 points at home is very manageable against a team leaking points at will.

Sydney and Brisbane meet on Wednesday night, with Bullets coach Will Weaver returning to Sydney to face his former club.

The Kings entered NBL27 as defending champions and again possess one of the deepest rosters in the competition as they've showed over the first two rounds. Brisbane's revamped lineup faces a significant road test, particularly against Sydney's size, depth and scoring options.

The opening fortnight has also given us more information about how Weaver intends to use his new Bullets roster, making this an intriguing matchup from both a team and player-prop betting perspective.

Thursday night's standalone game takes Melbourne United to Hobart for a difficult road assignment against the Tasmania JackJumpers.

Tasmania remain one of the NBL's toughest teams to face at MyState Bank Arena, while United's experienced roster gives them the personnel to handle the physical style the JackJumpers typically bring at home.

The JackJumpers will be sweating the fitness of a number of players as they look to put their best lineup out there against a strong United team.

Friday night begins with Illawarra returning home to face an Adelaide side carrying significant expectations into NBL27.

Bryce Cotton gives the 36ers one of the most dangerous offensive weapons in the league, while the Hawks have struggled through the opening rounds and will be desperate to get some momentum going, otherwise it may be a long season ahead.

Adelaide's revamped roster has already made them one of the most closely watched teams of the new season, and Friday night's road trip to Wollongong provides another useful test.

The Perth Wildcats return to RAC Arena this Saturday night looking to settle the score against the only team to beat them so far this season. John Rillie’s squad opened their NBL27 campaign with a flat 21-point home loss to South East Melbourne but have quickly steadied the ship. Coming off consecutive victories over Adelaide and New Zealand, the Wildcats have found their offensive rhythm. Elijah Pepper has been the clear standout, dropping 25 points in back-to-back games.

The South East Melbourne Phoenix arrive out west reeling from an absolute offensive nightmare. Following their impressive opening win in Perth, the Phoenix were brought crashing back to earth in an 86-61 Throwdown demolition against Melbourne United, shooting a miserable 4-of-41 from the perimeter. While 18-year-old prospect Dash Daniels starred in their first meeting with 24 points and 12 boards, asking this Phoenix roster to replicate that performance on the road while carrying so much shooting baggage is a stretch. Expect the Wildcats to capitalise and square the season ledger.

The Brisbane Bullets return to the Brisbane Entertainment Centre on Saturday night keen to bounce back from Wednesday's 93-78 defeat against Sydney. Before that stumble, Will Weaver’s squad looked sharp across the opening fortnight with consecutive victories. Back on their home floor with a rest advantage, the Bullets will be determined to lift the tempo and exploit an opponent facing serious physical fatigue.

Melbourne United return to John Cain Arena on Saturday night to host the Cairns Taipans, with both teams playing their second games of Round 3.

United will be backing up from Thursday night's trip to Tasmania, while Cairns have the longer turnaround after facing the Breakers in Auckland on Wednesday.

Those midweek games should give us an excellent lead into Saturday's matchup, particularly when assessing the handicap, total and player-prop markets.

South East Melbourne and Illawarra begin Sunday's NBL action at John Cain Arena, with both teams facing short turnarounds following Friday night games.

The Phoenix return from Perth after facing the Wildcats, while Illawarra travel south following their home clash with Adelaide. How each team handles the two-game weekend will therefore be an important consideration.

We'll also have another game of exposed form for both sides before assessing Sunday's markets, which should create several potential angles across the match line, total and player props.

The Adelaide 36ers will be desperate to make amends when they host the New Zealand Breakers at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre on Sunday afternoon. Trevor Gleeson's men sit at 2-2 for the season after suffering a dismal 114-92 defeat to the Illawarra Hawks on Friday night, a performance that prompted a scathing post-match assessment from the head coach. They face a tough assignment against a New Zealand outfit that also holds a 2-2 record but enters this clash with a distinct rest advantage. The Breakers last took to the court on Wednesday, securing a comfortable 98-75 victory over the Cairns Taipans in Auckland fuelled by star import Parker Jackson-Cartwright, who is currently averaging an impressive 26.5 points per game.

Despite the short turnaround and a frustrating injury list, the 36ers should show plenty of fight on their home floor. Adelaide still boasts immense offensive firepower in superstar Bryce Cotton, Zylan Cheatham, and Nick Rakocevic, and they will be heavily relied upon to carry the load against a New Zealand defence that can be vulnerable on the road. Expect a fierce response from a wounded Adelaide side, finding enough rhythm to secure an important victory and cover the small handicap.
