Following a tight 97-95 opening-round loss to Adelaide, Jacob Chance’s squad bounced back in terrifying fashion by crushing the South East Melbourne Phoenix 86-61. United completely suffocated their cross-town rivals, holding the Phoenix to just 27 per cent shooting from the field and an abysmal 4-of-41 from beyond the arc. Their new import duo is already firing on all cylinders, with big man Josh Oduro dominating the paint for 21 points and eight rebounds, while former NBA guard Cole Anthony stuffed the stat sheet with 18 points, six assists, and three steals. With Chris Goulding adding 17 points and five triples of his own, United possess a terrifying mix of offensive firepower and elite perimeter pressure.
The Verdict
A 4.5-point line essentially asks Melbourne to win by two possessions, which feels like a bargain given the stark difference in quality. If Tasmania struggled to generate clean looks against Cairns, trying to score against a United team that just choked the life out of South East Melbourne is an entirely different proposition. Scott Roth will undoubtedly have his side fired up for a response at home, but hustle only goes so far when you lack the half-court execution to keep the scoreboard ticking over.
