Melbourne Cup Nominations 2023

September 13th 2023, 1:47pm, By: Brendan Bunworth

In eight weeks time, one of 132 nominated horses will win the Big Dance - the 2023 Melbourne Cup!

The 2023 Melbourne Cup nominations have been finalised. There are only 15 internationals, down from 43 last year, with a local horse a big chance to win the Cup this year, with three Australian horses in the top five of 2023 Melbourne Cup betting markets at present.

Joseph O’Brien trained the last international raider, Twilight Payment, to victory in 2020. Connections have paid the relatively cheap fee of $600 entry with many now concentrating on the order of entry to get into the race.

Only 24 horses will compete in the Melbourne Cup, and this is after passing the order of entry, vet tests, acceptances and of course good form in the lead up.

The oldest horse nominated was Amade (10), while Chris Waller’s Madatsu (3) was the youngest.

The Waller and Maher & Eustace stables have nominated 31 horses between them, with 2022 winner Gold Trip backing up again.

The Waller trained Soulcombe is the current favourite at $9.00 after his excellent win last week, while the Willie Mullins trained Vauban is $10.00.

The Caulfield Cup remains the main lead up race to the big one with the group of 132 likely to be halved after that event which is 16 days out from the Melbourne Cup.

Weights for the big race will be declared next week.

The final field will be revealed on Saturday, November 4th at 4.30pm, followed by the barrier draw later that evening.

The 2023 Melbourne Cup takes place on Tuesday, November 7th, with a total prize pool of $8 million.
