The opening weeks of the 2026/27 A-League season have already delivered plenty of drama, with early surprises, shifting expectations and several clubs looking to establish themselves before the ladder begins to take shape. Matchweek 3 offers another fascinating set of fixtures, including a Friday night meeting between Brisbane Roar and reigning champions Auckland FC, a testing away trip for Wellington Phoenix and a Sydney derby between Macarthur FC and Western Sydney Wanderers.
At this stage of the campaign, results can be deceptive. Some teams are still finding their rhythm, while others are trying to prove that their bright starts are more than a flash in the pan. Home advantage, squad availability and demanding schedules could all play a role this weekend, particularly with the betting markets still adjusting to what we've seen so far.
We've identified three matches where the head-to-head odds offer some appeal, including opportunities to back teams at attractive prices rather than simply siding with the favourites. Below are our A-League Round 3 betting tips, followed by a closer look at each matchup and the reasoning behind our selections.

Brisbane Roar vs Auckland FC
Suncorp Stadium, Friday 30th October, 8:00pm AEDT
Brisbane have a chance to make an early statement after opening their season with a 2-1 win over Perth. Michael Valkanis’ decision to play Justin Vidic alongside Virgiliu Postolachi paid off, with Vidic’s pressing keeping Glory pinned back for much of the first half. Nam Tae-hee gave Brisbane composure behind them, and an 8-1 shot count at the break reflected how comfortably the Roar had controlled proceedings.
Auckland face this trip without the suspended Sam Cosgrove, taking away a physical target when they need to get out of defence. That could be particularly costly against Brisbane’s pressure. The visitors struggled to retain possession against the Wanderers and conceded five despite taking the lead. They need to do a better job of keeping the ball and giving their defenders a chance to regroup.
Brisbane did let Perth back into the contest, so there’s still work to do before we get too excited. Auckland have also won both previous league visits to Suncorp 2-0. However, Brisbane’s pressing and movement up front give them a chance to unsettle the visitors. With Cosgrove missing and another game on their home ground, we like the Roar to make it two wins from two.

Newcastle Jets vs Wellington Phoenix
McDonald Jones Stadium, Saturday 31st October, 3:00pm AEDT
Newcastle head home after surrendering a two-goal lead in Tuesday’s 5-2 loss to Kyoto Sanga. They now face their third game in eight days, with the return trip from Japan cutting into their preparation. The Jets created opportunities in last weekend’s 1-1 draw with Macarthur but put only three of their 13 shots on target. They’ll need to make more of their chances against a Wellington side with six days between matches.
Wellington made it two wins from two by beating the Mariners 2-0, with their best work coming after half-time. Chris Greenacre wasn’t happy with the opening half, but his side responded and finished with 11 of their 14 shots coming from inside the box. Rafael Duran and Corban Piper repeatedly troubled the Mariners with their movement, while Alex Rufer returned to the starting side alongside Max Anderson in midfield.
This is Wellington’s first away league game of the season, so their perfect start needs some perspective. Still, this looks a good time to visit Newcastle. The Phoenix can make the Jets’ defenders work with runs in behind, and that should become harder to manage if the hosts tire. We expect a competitive game, but Wellington’s attacking combinations and longer preparation make the away price worth a small stake.

Macarthur FC vs Western Sydney Wanderers
Campbelltown Sports Stadium, Saturday 31st October, 7:40pm AEDT
Macarthur have taken four points from their opening two games despite falling behind in both. They deserve credit for those recoveries, but there are concerns about how much pressure they’re absorbing. Newcastle recorded 45 touches inside the Bulls’ penalty area last weekend, compared with 13 at the other end. Macarthur still carried a threat going forward, but they can’t afford to keep inviting opponents into dangerous positions.
Western Sydney head to Campbelltown after putting five past Auckland, an exceptional return from six shots on target. Their finishing won’t always be that clinical, but 10 attempts from inside the box show they were getting into good positions. Miguel Di Pizio has already registered seven shots across two rounds, while Dylan Scicluna supplied two assists last weekend. Macarthur will have plenty to track beyond Brandon Borrello.
The Wanderers have also allowed just 1.4 expected goals across their opening matches against Sydney and Auckland, providing encouragement at the other end. Macarthur’s attacking options should keep this competitive, but Western Sydney look better equipped to sustain pressure and create chances throughout the game. If the Bulls spend another match defending their own box, we fancy the Wanderers to make them pay.
