Match Preview

Despite a Round 7 loss to Carlton at the MCG, the Cats have been one of the form sides of the competition over the last month or so, winning four of their last five games, most recently a thrilling three point win over the Pies at the MCG. Star recruit Bailey Smith ran rampant in the midfield for the Cats, racking up another 34 touches and a goal in the win, while Patrick Dangerfield continued his impressive resurgence with 29 touches and a goal.

The Cats will still be without some key players for the Round 9 clash, most notably Tom Stewart, who continues to battle a knee injury. Gryan Miers will come back into the side this week, however, after recovering from a concussion sustained in Round 6.

The Giants started the season in hot form, winning four of their first five games, but they have since dropped off, losing their last three straight games to the Crows, Bulldogs and Swans. They were defeated by the Swans by 18 points in their last game, despite having the top four ball-winners on the ground.

The Giants were hopeful for a return for Stephen Coniglio this week, but the veteran will spend one more week on the sidelines as he recovers from a glute injury. They will, however, bring in Jake Riccardi, Ryan Angwin and Harry Rowston to the extended side.

The Cats start as 17.5 point favourites here, which seems about right given the Giants form issues lately combined with a great home record for the Cats. Geelong's dominance at GMHBA Stadium is a cornerstone of their AFL success, with the highest home win rate in the league over the past 15 years.

Geelong enters this match on a four-game home winning streak, dating back to Round 21 of the previous season. They did lose to the Giants at home last season, but I expect them to be too strong at GMHBA on Sunday. Back them to cover the spread here.

Patrick Dangerfield 2+ Goals - Playing a huge role in the forward line for the Cats this season, having kicked 16 goals in eight games so far. Hasn’t played against the Giants in the last two seasons but could be a matchup nightmare for them.

Bailey Smith 25+ Disposals - Will be interesting to see if Toby Bedford goes to Holmes of Smith here but I think Holmes is the easier target for a tagger at the moment. Smith has been going about his business all season, passing 25 disposals in ever game and averaging 30.1.

Lachie Ash 25+ Disposals - The No.1 rated player in the game by Champion Data so far this season. Has had 25+ in all but one game and averages 28.2.

SGM Odds: $3.00 at BoomBet
