The Saints suffered just their 2nd loss of the season in Round 7, going down to the Power on Friday night by seven points. The Saints were not the usual defensive powerhouse we have seen throughout the season so far, giving up 12 goals, three of which came from defensive 50 turnovers.
Granted, the Saints were on the back of their first five day break this season, which could explain what were some pretty sloppy skills by their standards throughout the game. Rowan Marshall was the standout for the Saints, racking up 28 hitouts and 26 disposals on his way to a near best on ground performance despite the loss. Skipper Jack Steele was also back to his best just a few weeks after returning from injury, racking up 28 touches and a game high 11 tackles.
After a surprising start to the season, the Roos have gone on to lose their last five games in a row, culminating in a 90 point loss to the Demons at the MCG on Saturday night. They allowed 22 goals in the loss to the Demons, the highest score in any game so far this season.
The Roos have an average losing margin of 50 points in their five straight losses, proving not a lot has gone right post the two early wins for new coach Alistair Clarkson.
The Saints start as 37.5 point favourites here, and with a full eight days break that line seems about right here given the Roos issues of late. However, I’m opting to take the Roos at this line. The Saints should win this game, but they like to get the job done via strong defensive efforts rather than blowing the doors off teams offensively. I think the Saints could easily dominate this game from start to finish with a final score along the lines of 80-50. Back the Roos at the line here.
