2023 AFL Brownlow Round 6 Overview
The ANZAC Day round was spread over five days of AFL action, and was bookended by two magnificent performances by Marcus Bontempelli and Nick Daicos who seem to be the favourites to take home the Brownlow award this season. Former Brownlow medalist Patrick Dangerfield has strung together a couple of nice games, while Jeremy Cameron, Josh Kelly, Clayton Oliver and Patrick Cripps are likely to poll Brownlow votes in Round 6 action.

Fremantle 10.9.69 def by Western Bulldogs 17.16.118
The Dogs found some bite in the west against a disappointing Dockers side to record a big victory to kick off Round 6. Marcus Bontempelli was superb with 31 disposals, including 18 contested, 6 marks, 10 tackles, 8 clearances and 2 goals in a stunning performance. Adam Treloar wasn’t far behind with 35 disposals and 2 goals, while Jack Macrae (29 disposals, 7 tackles, 14 clearances) and Bailey Williams (23 disposals, 3 goals) were also excellent. Caleb Serong was again the stand out for the Dockers with 35 disposals, 6 tackles and 10 clearances.

Port Adelaide 16.13.109 def West Coast 10.9.69
The Power were in cruise control for most of the day to account for the undermanned Eagles with Connor Rozee winning the medal for his 29 disposals, 6 marks, 7 tackles and 2 goals. Willem Drew (25 disposals, 10 tackles, 6 clearances, 1 goal) and Zak Butters (25 disposals) were good contributors, while Jeremy Finlayson capped off their work with 5 goals from 14 disposals. Bailey Williams (21 disposals, 37 hitouts, 13 clearances) was best for the Eagles.

GWS Giants 13.9.87 def by Brisbane 16.12.108
The Lions had too much firepower in the end to get home against the Giants with Charlie Cameron bagging 7 goals from 15 disposals to be the difference between the sides. Daniel Rich was busy with 27 disposals while Hugh McLuggage picked up 21 disposals and 6 tackles. Much of the ball was won by the Giants mids with Josh Kelly (41 disposals) and Stephen Coniglio (38 disposals, 8 tackles, 9 clearances) dominant while Toby Greene (22 disposals, 2 goals) tried valiantly.

The Grand Final rematch was a bit of a fizzer as the Cats enjoyed being back at home to thump the Swans by almost 100 points. Patrick Dangerfield (31 disposals, 6 marks, 7 clearances, 1 goal) was back to his best in the middle while Jeremy Cameron (5 goals, 17 disposals, 6 marks) and Tom Hawkins (5 goals, 8 disposals, 5 marks) couldn’t be stopped by the undermanned Swans backline. Hard to see the Brownlow votes going anywhere else.

Hawthorn 11.10.76 def by Adelaide 10.13.79
The Hawks led late but the Crows kicked two goals in the dying minutes to pinch victory. Taylor Walker was huge with 20 disposals, 8 marks and 4 goals, while Rory Laird (29 disposals, 12 tackles, 10 clearances), Rory Sloane (30 disposals, 7 tackles, 5 clearances) and Jake Soligo (25 disposals, 6 tackles, 8 clearances) won plenty of ball. Jai Newcombe (26 disposals, 10 tackles, 7 clearances) and Conor Nash (28 disposals, 7 tackles, 7 clearances, 1 goal) were best for the Hawks.

Carlton 8.12.60 def by St.Kilda 12.10.82
The Blues dominated possession but St.Kilda’s defensive structure held up to maintain their position on top of the ladder. Jack Sinclair (27 disposals, 6 marks) was best for the Saints while Jade Gresham (20 disposals, 5 tackles, 1 goal) and Rowan Marshall (17 disposals, 21 hitouts, 1 goal) played their roles. Patrick Cripps (34 disposals, 7 tackles, 6 clearances), Sam Walsh (38 disposals, 9 marks, 5 clearances) and Adam Cerra (39 disposals, 7 marks, 7 clearances, 1 goal) were prolific for the Blues but ultimately, that didn’t convert into victory.

Gold Coast 14.13.97 def North Melbourne 7.12.54
The Suns landed a nice victory against a pretty poor Kangaroos team. Lachie Weller (28 disposals, 14 marks), Noah Anderson (28 disposals, 8 marks, 8 clearances) and Darcy Macpherson (24 disposals, 10 marks) were best for the Suns, while Jack Lukosius (20 disposals, 10 marks, 1 goal), Ben Ainsworth (24 disposals, 2 goals) and Ben King (5 goals, 10 disposals, 5 marks) were a handful up forward. The Kangaroos players will be a long way from the Brownlow votes in this one.

The Dees fought back from a 25-point deficit to claim victory on ANZAC Day Eve against the Tigers. Jack Viney won the medal for best afield for his 30 disposals, 5 tackles and a goal, with Clayton Oliver (31 disposals, 6 clearances, 1 goal) and Max Gawn (17 disposals, 8 marks, 17 hitouts, 1 goal) also very influential. Tim Taranto (33 disposals, 10 tackles, 6 clearances) and Jayden Short (30 disposals, 7 marks) were best for Richmond.

An ANZAC Day blockbuster in front of a record crowd produced an absolute classic! The Pies were down by 28 points at three-quarter time, but ran riot in the last quarter with incredible self belief to run all over the top of the Bombers. Nick Daicos was again outstanding and will be assured of yet another 3 Brownlow votes for 40 disposals and 2 goals as he won the ANZAC Day medal. Steele Sidebottom (31 disposals, 7 marks, 1 goal), Josh Daicos (30 disposals, 7 marks, 5 tackles) and Jordan De Goey (28 disposals, 7 clearances, 2 goals) were also crucial in the victory. Mason Redman (23 disposals) and Kyle Langford (17 disposals, 7 marks, 3 goals) were best for the Bombers.

For those who need a refresher on how our Brownlow vote predictor system works, we assign 6 votes per game so that our total votes are the same as the official 3-2-1 system, however we break up those votes as we see fit across potentially more than three players. Some games are really tough to call which way the votes will go, so a better predictive model is to split performances and assign half points to each player where there is doubt. So for example if two players dominate and it's too hard to split their performance, they are given 2.5 votes each, with the remaining 1 vote given to another player(s). This will give us a predictive total closer to their true total, rather than guessing. We can then form a 'range' for each player (i.e. a min and max we think players can poll) with the thinking behind this that the variations from the half votes will even out over the long term.
