The young guns are shining bright in season 2023 with Nick Daicos and Luke Davies-Uniacke likely to be among the early season leaders after a superb start to the season. The Blues were again on centre stage for a Thursday night clash with the reigning premiers, and this time they held their nerve to get a narrow win. Charlie Curnow was their star with 5 goals from 11 disposals and 9 marks. In the middle, the workload was shared around with Patrick Cripps (27 disposals, 6 tackles), Ed Curnow (26 disposals, 8 tackles, 1 goal) and Adam Saad (29 disposals, 7 marks) all very good. However arguably best on ground was Jeremy Cameron who played a lone hand for the Cats with 6 goals, 25 disposals and 8 marks in a brilliant effort.

Brisbane 14.9.93 def Melbourne 13.4.82
The lights went out at the Gabba but the lights were out for the Dees well before that, despite a late comeback following a bizarre break in play. Lachie Neale (27 disposals, 8 marks and 8 clearances) didn’t stop running, Will Ashcroft (31 disposals, 9 clearances, 1 goal) is going to be a superstar, while Dayne Zorko was superb before being subbed out late with 22 disposals, 9 marks and 2 goals. Clayton Oliver was best for the Dees with 37 disposals, 9 tackles and a goal.

The Pies ran rampant over the Power and now are into premiership favouritism for the 2023 AFL season! Nick Daicos shook off a tag to amass 32 disposals and 2 goals in a best-on-ground performance. Brother Josh wasn’t too bad either with 26 disposals and 2 goals. Darcy Cameron (18 disposals, 29 hitouts, 5 marks) and Tom Mitchell (27 disposals, 8 clearances, 1 goal) were also very good. Charlie Dixon (14 disposals, 5 marks, 6 hitouts, 3 goals) tried hard for Port.

Adelaide 10.16.76 def by Richmond 17.6.108
Richmond were challenged by the Crows but ran away late to get an important away win. Gun recruits Tim Taranto (28 disposals, 8 tackles, 7 clearances) and Jacob Hopper (23 disposals, 6 tackles, 1 goal) were outstanding for the Tigers, while Liam Baker (25 disposals, 1 goal) and Daniel Rioli (23 disposals, 7 marks) provided plenty of run. Rory Laird (39 disposals, 8 tackles, 7 clearances) was back to his best, while Lachie Sholl (27 disposals, 7 marks) also worked hard for the Crows.

Western Bulldogs 5.11.41 def by St.Kilda 14.8.92
The Saints have defied their injury woes to go 2-0 and leave the Bulldogs in a bit of a mess to start the season. Jack Steele (29 disposals, 6 tackles, 6 clearances, 1 goal) led from the front, despite an injured shoulder, with good support from Jack Sinclair (33 disposals), Mason Wood (24 disposals, 7 marks, 1 goal) and Rowan Marshall (20 disposals, 29 hitouts, 9 clearances). Bailey Smith (28 disposals) and Tom Liberatore (24 disposals, 8 tackles) were best for the Dogs.

Fremantle 10.12.72 def by North Melbourne 11.7.73
A controversial finish, but another win to the Kangaroos who have already matched their two wins from last season. We hope you took some of the value we pushed pre-season on Luke Davies-Uniacke as he’s now on 6 Brownlow votes after another superb game with 30 disposals, 7 marks, 6 tackles, 11 clearances and a huge last quarter goal. Harry Sheezel (30 disposals, 8 marks, 6 tackles) was also excellent once again, while Cam Zurhaar (26 disposals, 6 clearances) did well up the ground. Andrew Bryashaw (29 disposals, 7 tackles) and Caleb Serong (31 disposals) won plenty of ball for the Dockers but they couldn’t get over the line.

Sydney Swans 17.16.118 def Hawthorn 4.13.37
The Swans pumped the Hawks who look resigned to the wooden spoon this season. It was tall forwards Joel Amartey (4 goals, 11 disposals, 9 marks) and Logan McDonald (5 goals, 13 disposals, 5 marks) who did the damage up forward as the Hawks had no answers. Callum Mills (28 disposals, 6 marks, 2 goals) and Errol Gulden (28 disposals, 7 marks) were busy in the middle, with Will Day (26 disposals, 7 clearances) best for the Hawks.

Essendon 16.12.108 def St.Kilda 11.14.80
The Bombers shook off the Suns in the last quarter to grab the victory. Missing a heap of key forwards, it was Kyle Langford who stood up with 5 goals from 14 disposals and 7 marks. He was well fed by Zach Merrett (31 disposals), Will Setterfield (28 disposals, 9 tackles, 1 goal), Darcy Parish (30 disposals, 6 tackles, 11 clearances) and Dylan Shiel (27 disposals, 7 clearances, 2 goals). Touk Miller was typically busy for the Suns with 31 disposals.

West Coast 14.16.100 def GWS Giants 11.15.84
West Coast had landed their first win of the season over the Giants. Tim Kelly was back to his best with 32 disposals and a goal, while Jermaine Jones (27 disposals) provided plenty of run and carry. Jake Waterman cashed in up forward with 4 goals from 16 disposals and 8 marks. Jesse Hogan was a force for the Giants with 3 goals from 15 disposals and 8 marks, while Toby Greene tried hard with 4 goals from 18 disposals.

For those who need a refresher on how our Brownlow vote predictor system works, we assign 6 votes per game so that our total votes are the same as the official 3-2-1 system, however we break up those votes as we see fit across potentially more than three players. Some games are really tough to call which way the votes will go, so a better predictive model is to split performances and assign half points to each player where there is doubt. So for example if two players dominate and it's too hard to split their performance, they are given 2.5 votes each, with the remaining 1 vote given to another player(s). This will give us a predictive total closer to their true total, rather than guessing. We can then form a 'range' for each player (i.e. a min and max we think players can poll) with the thinking behind this that the variations from the half votes will even out over the long term.
